Use of Long Shaft Outboard.....

My engine on my small 14 foot flat bottom boat lost compression on a cylinder. Its off the boat getting repaired....I hope.

With hunting season closing in on me next weekend I have a friend that is going to let me use an engine he's not using. It is a long shaft outboard and my engine was a short shaft. I understand all about the cavitation plate needing to be even with the bottom of the boat but since this a temporary deal I"m not going to make any modifications to the transom of my boat for this engine. What can I expect running a long shaft engine on a boat that is designed for a short shaft engine.

Thanks

It will cause more drag due to the lower unit being submerged so far. You may also get alot of spray up around the motor area for the same reason. But if it's just temporary and maximum speed is not a concern, then go for it..

Re: Use of Long Shaft Outboard.....

Well, just got back from picking the motor up and its not a long shaft. I think its all for naught though. Its in really rough shape and the top cylinder was full of water. I think its been in a flood. the bottom cylinder didnt have any water in it only the top. When I took the spark plugs out the top one was loose and the bottom was tigh. They're also mismatched....one plug is a Champion L78V and the other is a Champion 7828. It obvious this engine has been neglected.
