Re: Use the parking-break, or else...

The wife and I have this down, but now I am teaching my 16 year old to relieve the wife . . . Anyway, the trick for us is FRS radios. She doesn't really like it, but I coach her (and now him) down the ramp whether we are launching or retrieving. The most important part though is I always ask "is it in drive" or "park" or etc. I am so much more comfortable actually knowing that they have shifted out of reverse when I wave to them as I back off the trailer. Those will work on older trucks before ABS, Like mine. I know the part your talking about, but I'm not sure were to buy one, if I can locate one I may buy one and install it.

You might want to look for a "Line lock" I belive these would install on the brake line(s) out of the brake master cylinder. You may need more than one. When you press on the brake it pushes the hyd. fluid from the master cyl. out to the calipers. The line lock when activated would hold that pressure on the calipers even after you lift your foot from the pedal. I do not know if they offer a mech version or just electric. If they are just electric you will want to keep your engine running while this is on so you do not drain the batt.

It was mentioned in an earlier post that the park brake was innefective. It's innefective for one of two reasons.

1. The park brake cables are frozen, from lack of use.

2. The rear brake pads/shoes are worn. That situation effects regular braking too.

Both are remedied easily.

You DO NOT want to be messing around with the brake lines on that truck. You will mess up your ABS system-permanantly. Leave the "line locks" to the heavy duty trucks and race cars.

I've launched close to 8K pounds with my '05' F-150, with NO issues whatsoever. I set the brake, use a wheel chock and don't worry about it. It doesn't move. The truck can easily handle it if you use the precautions readily available.

DJ, the parking break was not used... the guy just had it in "Park"... as I am sure a lot of people do.

Do people actually leave their truck on the ramp WITHOUT the parking brake on? How can you think that "popping" noise is ok for the tranny? I've never chocked a tire nor have I ever seen anyone do it. I've never had a problem at a ramp either. A little common sense goes a long way.

What noise?

I do not normally either, But with 8,000 pounds, you better believe I do, especially on these steep western ramps.

A vanishing commodity.

I always use a chock on my tires after a friend of mine lost his truck . He had set the parking brake being as it was a standard transmission and the thing snapped and the truck went out into the river floated for about three minutes and then sank.

Re: Use the parking-break, or else...

I have used a chock before when I had a truck with manual transmission. The problem I always had was when the truck had rolled back a little against the chock it was impossible to remove with out pulling up, and then I had to get out after pulling the truck up and pick the chock up while the truck is setting there with just the park brake holding. After some redneck engineering I came up with an idea of tying a rope to the bed pocket and just dragging the chock along side the truck until I was on flat ground. Before this great idea I had to asked strangers to help pull the chock out from the wheel after you pull up a little, you will get some very weird looks when you ask someone you don’t know to- pull your chock.
