Is it ok to use regular 5w30 or 10w30 in a 4.3L mercruiser alpha one I/O? (the engine, not the drive) I've been using the recommended mercruiser oil, but I was wondering what's the difference?

Uhhh, nothing but a thinner wallet due to buying OEM oil.

I use Chevron Delo 400 straight 30 wt, I don't know if automotive mult vis oil stands up well to constant 3000-4000 running that marine engines get all the time.

Simple, I believe Merc recommends (after their oil) straight weight 30 or 40 oil, depending on ambient temperature. I would think the 5W-30 oil too light for the constant load. I use the Mercruiser 25W-40 oil which I have heard is a unique formulation by Merc. <br /><br />I usually do some fishing in near freezing conditions, and feel the 25 viscosity is better on startup. I also put a heating pad under the engine oil pan in the cold weather and turn it on full (40Watts) the night before I plan to use the boat. I think it will keep both the engine and oil warm for startup.

Probably any oil will be okay, but how many oil changes do you do a year?If only one or two,how much can you save a year on 10 quarts of oil,and why do it?<br />DHP

i put 20w50 in a inline 6 merc.once and the lifters would start clattering after running on plane 10-15 minutes.switched back to 40 and every thing was fine.[just another opinion]

Sounds kind of foolish to me, but I guess if you want to save a couple of bucks a year and don't mind spending a few thousand a year for a new drive, then go for it. It just sounds like a dumb trade-off to me.

It sounds to me like you didn't read his post, he said engine, not drive

I see no reason whatsoever that you couldnt use an automotive oil durring the boating season, ("BUT") Durring the layup season, you should either use a marine oil or an HDDO, Heavy Duty Diesel oil for storage protection.

I used 30 weight oil for my 3.0L I/O mercruiser. It runs fine.

Re: using automotive oil for a 4.3 stern drive

Be careful with advice to use automotive and diesel oils in your Mercruiser. Marine engines operate at very high speeds and loads when compared to passenger and diesel engines. Mercury's 25W-40 is designed specifially for marine use.<br /><br />Off-the-shelf automotive lubricants contain polymers which give them their multiviscosity properties. These polymers can make a 10 weight base oil have the added viscometric properties of a 30 or 40 weight. The viscosity of these common oils tends to change with the flow rate of the oil due to the "shearing" or breaking apart of the long "strands" of the polymer. These are called non-newtonian oils. Under high speed and load of a marine engine, some of these polymers experience permanent shear loss resulting in a subsequent change in viscosity. This can cause low oil pressure and engine damage. Probably what member xltier experienced.<br /><br />Mercury's 25W-40 oil is a Newtonian fluid. This means the viscosity does not change with the rate of flow. It is formulated without polymers. The multiviscosity properties are obtained by blending several very special base stocks that eliminate the need for the polymers, which are commonly used to give automotive lubricants their multiviscosity properties.<br /><br />Marine engines also experience unusual extended periods of idle or trolling. This creates a need for the oil to continue to function even when diluted with fuel and moisture. Mercury's 25W-40 has a unique additive package designed for marine use so it can deal with potential problems caused by these operating conditions. Some of the polymers used in automotive oils are hygroscopic, or water gathering. They can form a light brown emulsion usually observed in the crankcase breather areas. The wet marine environment tends to exacerbate this problem. This further inhibits the automotive oil's imulsified polymer to function as a multiviscosity fluid.<br /><br />Mercury recommends the special 25W-40 oil for all temperatures. If it is not available they recommend a straight 20W at temperatures below 32'F, a straight 30W at temperatures between 32'F and 50'F, and a straight 40W at temperatures above 50'F. In the unlikeley event none of these oils are available, their last recommendation is to use a quality 20W-40 or 20W-50 API oil.<br /><br />According to Mercury:<br /><br />IMPORTANT: The use of non-detergent oils, multi-viscosity oils (other than Quicksilver 25W-40 or a good quality 20W-40 or 20W-50), synthetic oils, low quality oils or oils that contain solid additives are specifically NOT recommended..<br /><br />The best bet is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Re: using automotive oil for a 4.3 stern drive

(Also posted at the Wallyworld oil fiasco..)<br />So, OilDoc, and whoever else would like to comment, what is your opinion of using Shell Rottelo(sp)Diesel 15-40 in a 350 GM that for 4 years ran on straight 40w? (Reman in 96, sat since 99). Runs a 5000lb cruiser at 3200 rpm cruise with raw water cooling at 140. Does more sitting obviously, and the oil gets dumped in the fall when it comes out. Just curious, Seems to me the additives and slower speed running, with a lot of idleing might be just the ticket for this oil. It its there now, and want to try it this coming year.

Local marina parts guy told me he only carries outboard oil. Said they can't compete with the local Walmarts on motor oil. Thought about synthetic oil? Heard good, bad, and opinionated remarks.

I have used automotive oils in my I/O for over 30 years, haven't lost an engine yet. Right now I'm with Bondo, Mobil 1 15-50 year round. IMO best oil available for any type 4 cycle engine.

Well, Its not posible to deny TheOilDocs remarks, as they are strictly by the book. I however believe that the Rotella oil would be the cats meow for an I/O application. Great shear strength, great add pack, great TBN rating, (Which gives you your storage and moisture protection). There isnt anything in a diesel oil that will harm an automotive engine or a boat engine, Its all better in MHO.
