I find it amazing that Sea Ray, or any builder, would do a test, find it unacceptable, and build them anyway.


Say's a lot about Sea Ray's R & D and or quality assurance departments. ;)

Your opinion is based on 1st hand experience so it's worth a lot. :cool:

Those tug boats weren't built for speed and the v-drive boat they used is crippled by an inefficient 12 degree shaft angle...Gear selection plays a big part in the equation as do propellers. I seriosly doubt Sea Ray did much research when it comes to squeezing the most performance out of either of those luxo cruisers.


Show me a stern drive that can beat either of these types of V-Drive boats and I'll jump ship. :cool:

now if he was in fact looking for drag- high performance boats, i could see your comments.
while the pix you show of a vee drive is nice, its not close to the backwards mounted engine with the drive mounted on the back of the motor and the front of the motor next to the transom

Im looking at sea ray with "vdrive" inboards. What exactly is vdrive?

we have a 310 with B IIIs
we looked at 310's with both v-drive and IO. we settled on the IO because we need a easily trailerable boat. the IO have the option of being able to raise the drives giving less draft and we can use a trailer with bunk's clear to the end of the trailer giving more options when looking for a trailer. v-drive,and inboard drives have to have cut outs in the back of the trailer to accommodate the props and shaft hanging under the bottom.
when looking at 310's, the BIII's give better performance, better economy, and have a lot more room in the engine compartment than v drive boats.

this doesn't mean we wouldn't have a v drive boat if-- we dry stacked or docked, and not moving much or a good deal on a clean boat

in the boats you mention they are a good solid drive with not quite but almost as good numbers as different drives in the same boat.

maintenance wise i think they are less, maybe a lot less than the IO.

And your point? Some of the guys have brought up speed and efficiency. I've used these illustrations to prove v-drives are the kings of fast and efficient. :cool:

If you were right about this, every open class race boat in the country would be running a stern drive. The fact is the stern drive is only superior in some applications.

I think Vdrives in Express Cruisers and Vdrives in race boats are two different animals using the same technology. The OPs questions asks about Vdrives in general, and in racing applications they seem to be the whats what. In express cruiser terms (which sounds more like what the OP wants) the I/O boats seem to be a little quicker and more efficient.

I answered appropriately. Fast and efficient (his words) are ruled by the mighty v-drive. Put that in your pipe...;)

Yes, initially, his questions lacked specific application.

No one has given any real solid proof to that. Sea Ray's test only showed they don't know how to rig a v-drive for best performance.
