I just had a remanufactured powerhead installed on my boat. I have the old one (1987 1.6L)and was told that it was not rebuildable primarily due to some scoring on one of the crankshaft rod journals. I can feel the roughness with my fingernail. I saw one post from a guy who claimed to be able to "rebuild" crankshafts. I am skeptical. What are your thoughts?

Outside of the crank, one piston is toast and there is a "corrosion" chunk about the size of a half of a lifesaver out of one of the block liners that a cylinder sleve fits into. I am thinking of attempting a rebuild in my own sweet time but don't want to spend time or money on a motor that will not be reliable.

Re: V4 Crankshaft

Solittle: We're one of those possibilities. That's the small crossflow V-4 engine. We'd repair the journal by regrinding it--stronger than rebuilds and the track record shows it. We'd regrind and polish the one journal, refinish the rod, and provide a new bearing, all warranteed for two years for $200. Extra rod journals are $120 ea., $90 w/o rod refinishing. What you're describing usually cleans up at less than 0.010" undersize.
Call us @ (860) 683-1317 and/or visit www.neecaprecisions.com
