Valve adjustment??

I am wondering how to adjust my valves on my remanufactured engine. It came from the factory with a loose rocker arm stud and one of my exhaust valves was not opening, causing the engine to backfire through the carb.
The engine is a 4.3LX Mercruiser with a Weber 4-barrel carb.

The exhaust risers on each side have either throttle controls or other electronics bolted to them which makes it impossible to remove the valve covers to adjust the valves. If I remove these, there is a bolt sticking out the back side of the exhaust riser that hits the valve cover, I cant remove the exhaust riser and start the engine. what do I do here??

Howdy,

This is sounding a lot like this engine is not a Vortec?

I don't remember what you have. The Mercruiser service manual (#25) indicates no adjustment.

Valve adjustment is sort of critical on a flat tappet, solid lifter engine. An engine with hydraulic lifters is a LOT easier since the adjustment is just to get them "in the ballpark" and the hydraulic lifter does the rest.

Here's a link I found for generic hydraulic lifter adjustment.

http://paceperformance.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=637

The Mercury manual (#25) on page 3A-45 indicates that you should torque the rocker nuts to 22 ft-lbs (no adjustment req.)

Service Manual #25 GM V6 1998 - 2001
Opens 1st 3 sections. You need to open, download, and save other sections.

You NEED to determine what that engine is. (year/model/etc) and set the valves accordingly. The engine doesn't have to be run or running to set them.

I hope this helps...

I am trying to respond from my LG Dare cell phone. My engine was a 1992. It is not a roller engine. it has flat hydrolic lifters. I will check that each rocker arm nut is torqued to 22 ft lbs.

Well,

The procedure is on (manual #7) page 3B-11.

Pretty much the same as the "generic" procedure above. DO NOT TORQUE YOUR ROCKERS to 22 ft-lbs.

You really need to download manual #7
