Re: very poor hole shot

In the pic you did post of your boat the motor appears to be mounted low, running very rich and it looks to have the exhaust opened.

Is it still the same?

Everything is still the same except that I raised the motor a notch, which did seem to help a little. I am not sure what you are looking at when you say I have the exhaust opened.

How do you know if the motor is running rich? How do you keep the motor from running rich?

It does smoke a little out the prop hub when it first starts and it is a little hard to get it to idle without dying. I usually have to wait a few minutes to let it warm up to get it to idle without dying.

I am not sure if these are signs of a rich running motor.

The motor does great when I get up on plane. It will do 45 MPH no problem. Although, for some strange reason, it did cut out all of a sudden one time when I was going top speed.

The compression numbers look good. Should be able to get up and go. Have you tried checking the spark when the engine is under load? Take a friend with you, remove the cowling and put an inductive timing light on one plug wire, then perform a holeshot. Check for misfires in the light. Repeat on the next plugwire.

No, I have not checked the spark when the engine is under load. I thought the spark was fine because the engine does fine when we shift out weight and make the boat get on plane. The boat will go 45 MPH at 5600 RPM. You think the engine is misfiring when trying to get out of the hole but when on plane the engine is not misfiring?

Re: very poor hole shot

If raising the motor one hole helped, move it up another hole.

There is a lot of unburned fuel coming out the exhaust and a lot of exhaust soot where it shouldn't be. A motor running that rich can be a result of several things. Jets wrong or worn, maybe someone drilled them, too low timing, losing spark and so on.

Why would a rich running motor make it hard to get on plane?

Re: very poor hole shot

because it is flooding with gas.

I guess what I am not wording my questions correctly, so let me rephrase.

If the engine is flooding with gas, then would I not be able to get the boat up to 45 MPH fully loaded?

If the motor is flooding it is not running correctly period !!! and must be investigated and corrected. Did it used to go at 45 mph fully loaded ???

I didn't say it was flooding, I said it looks to be running very, very rich. It may be flooding on a cyliner but at the least it appears to be running too rich which will certainly cut down on power. It also looks like there are holes cut in the exhaust. At any rate, there's exhaust residue where it shouldn't be. That needs to be addressed first.

It use to go about 38 MPH before I got the carbs rebuilt.

I guess I will tell the mechanic to look at it again. I just figured that there must not be much loss of power considering how fast it can go.

As for the holes in the exhaust, I will try to find out if these holes were additions or came with the motor stock.
