Re: Veterans

My one great regret is not doing a tour in the military. I was ready to enlist in 1977 when I got out of high school but Carter was president, if my memory serves me correct, and took away the G.I. Bill for a short time. I went to college instead and began a career in law enforcement.
I was a military brat, lived 6 years in Lima, Peru from 1958-1964. Dad was in the Air Force assigned to O.S.I. in south america. I lived in Manchester, N.H., Amarillo, TX, & Chandler, AZ. at the Air Force bases there. As a kid I wanted to be a pilot. I loved going to the flight line watching the planes. I'm a sim-pilot instead, flying FS2004.

My hat is off to those who have served, thank you.
:)

If the previous administration had not been so h*ll bent on spending money on innercity midnight basketball, the G'ment could have been a little more attentive to all you Vets. God Bless you all!

:) They never took away the GI Bill!!!
They have revamped it some!!!
When I was in they would pay for college, you could buy a house on the GI Bill. Now adays I think they match dollars up to a certain amount thanks to the democrats!!!!

The past four years the vetrans put on a recruiting campaign. They had so many vetrans that were coming out of the woodwook and intitled to benifits the government passed a memo to stop the practice of recruiting, hate to say it but that was Bushes doing!!!

:) Belonged to the Legion Post#3 for 30 years!!!
there was a time when we weren't getting enough vetrans to keep the Legions afloat and they started taking social members, which was wrong.

They were allowing people with no service record to join and a regular enlisted military person couldn't join because he or she didn't have the dates to quilify. they should have let the military guy join!!!

talk about a screwed up system!!!!

Re: Veterans

I stand corrected, I know they did not "take away" the G. I. Bill, I meant to say it was stripped of most of its benefits for short timers during the time frame I mentioned.
This was about 1976,77, or 78 or so. It only lasted a short duration as the benefits were put back into the Bill. By then, I was in college in Tucson.
I think the G.I. Bill is in pretty good shape today but I really have no clue....

I did pretty good on the the GI bill gig..After tuition cost I netted about 500$ a month. Only had to listen to someone who knew less then me.

Although I did lose a weeks profit once during the Iranian crisis. An Iranian made a mistake about standing up in class and said how great his leader was and how bad we were. I guess the Professor thought I was not funny when I tried to throw him out a two story window..When I returned a week later the Iranian was gone and the Professor called me Mr after that.. :D

gonfisn,
LOL! We musthave been in about the same time. I went in to get the GI bill before it died. I thought I did pretty good too, until I read your post. I only got about $400/mo. I'm jelous! But I did by a house for $1 down in the mid 80s.

Listening to professors & aides who were about my age try to tell me how the world really worked got old quick. That's why I had to go back to school at 45. I still have a disdain for acedemia, but I keep it inside until I get my degree. (one more month).

Re: Veterans

hi, joe94, You don't identify which region your in. my experience is that some regions do better for us than others,
all vets are entitled to care, need not be disabled, i have refered vets for diabetus care, and they get exams and low cost meds, no glasses, in pa, yet in ny they do, there maybe a priority based on eligibility, which is 1st POW,SERVICE CONNECTED 100%, 50%,30%, AND THEN THE GENERAL VET POPULACE AS FAR AS THE BUDGET GOES.
IF you are a snowbird in florida for instance i know you will do better seeking glasses, hearring aids by temporally transfering your file to the north and seeking care while here, the va does allow you to continue care as you move about the country. florida has too many military retirees to wack up the benes to.
I have hearing aids, eye glasses, 5 meds provided monthly, and see the doc every 3 mo. and he coordinates beautifuly with my civilian care provider. Im payment exempt , 60% disabled for the last 35 years.
my rehab was a free education, va home loan, not a good finacial deal.
but i did advoid them for 30years until the recent upgrade in the vet healt care reform.

US Navy 83-06, I worked on S3 aircraft, and only went out on carriers. I now have some time to catch up on some fishing, and I am learning to work on my 1982 Ranger Chief. Retired as a Chief Petty Officer.

Re: Veterans

ilmostro,

I was at Group Monterey from 87 to 89. Tough duty huh. :)

They've made that a Station now, I think it falls under Group San Fran. You should have been there right around the 44' to 47' conversion. Did you ever get to ride on that boat?

Re: Veterans

USCG 1972 - 1976.

Approx one year on a high endurance cutter that was built in the 30s and saw action in both WW2 and Vietnam. Forget diesels, we had steam turbines, baby! Man, was I glad to get off of that rust bucket!

Spent the rest of my tour as an aircraft mechanic and SAR aircrewman out of San Fran.
