Vinyl Wrapping Aluminum Hull?

Hey guys, I've been looking around for answers to this question and can't seem to find any, so I figured I'd just ask haha. Has anyone seen/heard of wrapping an aluminum hull in vinyl (as in sticker/decal vinyl)? Could be a nice change instead of the bare aluminum. I have access to the materials and can most likely do it for fairly cheap, however I'm just wondering if it's worth the time or if it's even possible. Thanks in advance :D!

Its done frequently around here, from plain to extreme custom printed designs.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,....

Is this a riveted, or welded hull,..??

I gotta believe it would be beyond Tedious to cut around All those rivets...

YD's Right,... Paint is a Better alternative....

Somehow I get a picture of you covering the hull (including the bottom) to prevent leaks more than being decorative. Is leak proofing what you have in mind?

They hold up fairly well, there is a clear layer over the colored layer. Like all other coatings, they aren't perfect, but can be custom designed for much less than the same thing done in paint. If you can take a picture of it, or design the pattern on a computer it can be duplicated in vinyl.

So you have a custom Vinyl wrap..and clear over that ?? How do you repair ?

I know the process..I dont know the repairs of wrap coatings..nor would I suggest it..

I used to work in a trailer factory (deisel truck) and they guys who put vinyl decals on the trailers would patch them if something happened like,,, burning through the decal with a torch (don't know how that happened:redface:... LOL:D) They would just cut out the bad area and put a patch over it, barely noticable. Though,,, this was a trailer and not a boat.

Exactly..not a boat wrap..I still want to know how boat wraps are better..( prints have to be on file for direct print repairs I would imagine ) ....

They don't scratch easily and I think you can replace a section of clear if needed, probably cut out a section of the print too.

I have several friends that are guides and their boats are fully wrapped and after a while (years) there are defects, but it isn't bad.

Yes, but you just supply a pic, or any art work and they can print it, several have very unique art work.

This is just one example, this is all vinyl on these boats. Some are much more elaborate than this, but I knew where I could find this one.

I'm not saying they're perfect, but they work, I don't have it on my aluminum jet boat.

Correct, but the concept would hold true. Gouge up a section of the boat wrap and you would need to order a new section of boat wrap to cover up the defect. I'm sure the wraps are not a "1-shot" deal as they use them on vehicles al the time, if they get into an accident there has to be a way to replace the bad section.

The trick would be getting the patch perfectly aligned so you can not notice it.

Re: Vinyl Wrapping Aluminum Hull?

I've been seeing more and more racing boats and pro kingfishing boats these days wrapped in plastic. Starting to look more like NASCAR around here.

Wrapping here is popular...and the price is right. You could wrap several times for the cost of a paint job.

I'd wrap too if somebody would write me out a check every month. :) Hey, Guy Harvey, are you around?

As has already been said the wraps are great for sponsor advertising for pro anglers and guides,..

Some folks order the "pro wrap" from the factory to keep the paint under it nice to up the resale value down the road as well,...

Re: Vinyl Wrapping Aluminum Hull?

Well I have a call in for one of the Premier wrappers out there to help explain this wrap thing.. ( I should be contacted Mon-Tues and will chime in again ).

I was specifically wondering about some of the Q and A's on the site..like this..

"Q: How long will a wrap last on my vehicle?
A: Our wraps will normally outlast the vehicle. You can expect your wrap to last 5 years or longer, as long as you?re careful about high pressure washing."

If the wrap normally outlasts the vehicle..and expect 5 years or longer from the wrap..then What vehicle are they talking about lol..? A Nascar that slams into the wall every 3 months ?? ;) ...

Ill get back after talking to a rep :) ..
