I have a 1981 mercruiser 260. I am only getting 4 to 5 volts to the coil. what is the problem? need Help

What is the battery voltage when it's 4-5 volts at the coil? How did you measure it? (Where did you have your meter test leads)

Any voltage tests are meaningless if you have a very low battery.

battery Voltage is 12. measured with volt meter positive side of the coil to a nuetral ground. will not start, if it does it runs very ruff and usually stalls. if I put a direct 12 volts to the coil from the battery if fires right up and purrs like a kitten.

No one is commenting on the voltage problem I am having, can anyone provide some kind of direction where to start? or am I wasting my time here?
