1972-73 mercruiser 4 cylinder with a merc one outdrive. I went out yesterday on the boat and notice the my volt meter was pegged all the way to the right. If I idle back down to idle it would go back to where it is supposed to go but once I got back up to plane, it would shoot back up again. I would also like to add that my circuit breaker tripped once as well and this is the first time for me.. Any suggestions?

Re: Voltmeter question

I would put on a DMV (voltmeter)and get some readings

If the regulator failed it would allow the voltage to go to high and cause problems

I will try that. I hope that I did not already fry something.

Be sure to check the water in your battery. Over charging can boil the water out very quickly.

Thanks. If the altenator is fried I will more then likley be out the rest of the season. Those are expensive. WOW! How hard are they to rebuild? I am sure it is internally regulated.

Re: Voltmeter question

Any good rebuild shop should be able to go over it unless it is to far gone

There are places like ARCO Or HERE that sell new marine units at a fair price

I'd pull it & take it to an alternater shop, like Tom says, I'll bet they will get it fixed for less than a 100 bucks, & quick, too.....:)

OK I took it to the shop and they did a test on it. When they did their test it was showing that it was barley charging. Now this makes sense. I think that I forgot to add that when I first started the boat it was charging at like 11-13 volts. Then I would bump the throttle a little and it would go right to where it was supposed to go. Then once under wot it would shoot all the way up and overcharge. The shop said that beings that it is so old that they would just replace it altogether. What do you think? They said that they would rebuild it for about 75.00$ but no guarantee. So should I get this done or buy the one in my last response? I only have one wire and a ground

They're both essentially the same thing, so go with the $75 if you can't buy new.

72-73 Mercruiser would have an ammeter, not a voltmeter originally.

It must have been changed out because it reads numbers from left to right its like 8-12-14-16 then it says volt right under the numbers.
