Where do I find the appropriate numbers to order a head gasket?? New boat to me came with no paper work. All I know is that it is a 125,from late 60's or early 70's.

Re: volvo 115A....not a 125.....head gasket!!!

I found the tag on the block,it's a 115A not a 125 as I thought. After removing the head gasket,I found a very small scratch near the cylinder opening. It ends about a 1/16" from the edge of the cylinder opening.
Can I use something to "fill" the scratch before installing the head gasket????

Look on the port side of the engine. There should be a brass tag with the model and serial numbers on it. It's probably covered with paint and/or corrosion. So carefully scrape and brush it clean.

Are you sure that "Scratch" is not a "Crack" and what ever your problem is, was due to a cracked block, not just a head gasket.
Here is one place with the head gasket, but you are going to need more than just a head gasket to complete the job, and gaskets are a one time use item.

And no, you don't fill scratches with anything on the machined surface of the block.

Re: volvo 125

The "crack" starts at the water port next to the first cylinder. The engine was backfiring due to too much methynol, used to absorb water in the tank. Maybe half dozen good ones before I shut down engine.
There was surface rust at first cylinder, soft steel wool got rid of it.Didn't touch inside of cylinder wall with wool.
The scratch/crack,upon closer insp. with a mag. glass, looks like a gouge/indentation, very short in length, width and depth.Could the backfire cause this type of damage???
