So at the end of the 2010 season I ran the props through a sand bar. Kind of chunked the props a little bit bud had those fixed and it seemed the props would rub just a little bit. So we didn't think much of it and ran it all last season and when we winterized it we checked the oil in the drive and everything seems to be fine with no water inside. I would really just like to fix this, I ran a dial indicator on them and they are about .010 out on the ouside shaft and about the same on the inside shaft. I guess Im looking to see if there is a good way to straighten them out without pulling the lower unit off. I work at a place that straightens shafts with heat so i didn't know if that was a possibility or if that would just burn everything up. Or what the possiblilty of bending them back by hand would be. It doesn't seem to be a big problem yet but I don't want it to be later on either. I guess I'm looking for the best possible solution to my problem. Thanks again!

Re: Volvo DP-S Bent shafts.

Did you have the dial indicator on the shaft or the prop?
You are not going to bend the outer prop shaft, and highly unlikely you will bend the inner propshaft and only do minor damage to the props.
What drive do you have?

Re: Volvo DP-S Bent shafts.

I measured it on the props, I guess I don't know what you mean by what drive I have? Its a DP-S, I know there are different generations of drives so how will I know which one I would have other than that? I guess I just assumed that it would have to be the shafts, but isnt there some sort of dampner or something like that built into the props. They are F5 props if that makes a difference at all. Thanks so much for the help.

Re: Volvo DP-S Bent shafts.

DP-S tells me what drive it is. If you measured it on the props, then you didn't measure the shafts, you measured the prop hub runout.
Props do have rubber hubs in them, and .010 is very minor. Hubs are normally centered by the blades, balance, and a little outer hub to get the rubber center hub set. Sometimes the prop hub will rub the drive. File a bit off the prop so it doesn't hit the drive.

So the Contact between the two props shouldnt be to much I need to worry about then? Also do you know if there a way to have the hub recentered in the props as well?

Have no idea, ask your local prop shop, they will have to look at the props to find out.

Thanks Don, I really appreciate the help. Im going to pull the props off tomorrow and run an indicator on both shafts just to be sure, but I'm sure your right its probably in the props. Ill double check it and post up what I find out. Thanks again!
