i think what we are looking at is a expansion/core plug which is supposed ot be there. V/P maniolds do not have the fitting on the middle of the manifold like the mercs. that hole and core plug should be sealed. So, that 'hole' is on the exhaust manifold (right?). It looks kind of small to be a core plug, but the short answer is yes there should be something there, as it should not leak.
Check the other side manifold to see what the 'plug' may look like (usually the manifolds are symmetrical.
As to the damage to the engine . . . it sort of depends on how much water was leaking. Check to see if any of the rubber exhaust pipe couplers look like they may have melted or show other signs of deterioration.
I'm a newbie here but that discolored line running through the "V" in the Volvo lettering isn't a crack, right? It`s kinda hard to tell from the picture but it looks like there is some sort of plug in there, perhaps broken off as I do not see a lot of threads visible. That is a manifold drain plug hole. Can you stick a finger up a ways into it? If it not leaking badly, you might be able to get through the rest of the season and make it an off season project.
ooh, good call, so focused on the circled area, toally didnt look at the big pictureI'm a newbie here but that discolored line running through the "V" in the Volvo lettering isn't a crack, right?
