Volvo Penta 5.0 305 engine questions.

Ok here is my problem I have not used my boat in two years . My brother in law used it for a half season but never had it winterized (Long Story). Well to add to problems the cover I had collapsed over the engine so rain could fall over top of engine maybe the carburator it has cleaner on top of carburator I just dont know. Here is the question:

What should I do before I even try to start engine?
a) Should I pull plugs and crank engine over in case water is in cylinders .If water entered Carburetor should I put some mystery oil in the cylinders through spark plug holes in case water got in cylinders. Then crank it over to work oil in .

Should I drain and change oil before or after I start it (in case engine is damaged from possible freezing)?
I know that if it frooze the oil should turn to a milky white color (I am praying it did not happen).


Any suggestions?

Check the oil, make sure its full and fire it up.

If the boat was left with water in the engine in New Hampshire, its most likely toast.

Run it for 10 minutes and check the oil.

Let us know what you find.

Ok well I finally got the engine to turn over put some mystery oil down carburetor just in case. It would not fire (to be expected) but I have a question for you guys about the carburetor it is (excuse the French) pissing fuel out the carburetor from above and from below choke fly valve . Also I guarantee it is flooded and the gas is two years old so wondering if even with stabilizer it would be good. Here is what I think I should do to get it running:

1) Drain tank fill new fuel.
2) Change Plugs
3) Check spark
4) Change fuel filter

What would be best way to check and see if I am getting a spark?
Take plug out and see it is arcs from spark plug to engine block?

Anything I miss?

Ayuh,... Fix/ Rebuild the Carb 1st,...
Then try to start it with a remote fuel tank...

Ok took all the spark plugs out some had condensation on them some a ton of fuel so I took all plugs out added some mystery oil to each cylinder and then to crank over engine with no fuel flowing to engine a few times. So I crank for 5 to 10 seconds then let sit for a minute. I did this twice then battery started to die a bit so I stopped.I have two battery"s to play with so I replaced drained one with new one on let it crank a few more times then stopped . Came back this afternoon to give it one more go and nothing not even a click looked at voltage 12 volts.I then took a wrench and tapped the starter next time it cranked . Just to make sure start was ok tried again a few minutes later nothing tapped the ending of starter and it worked cranked twice waited another few minutes. And nothing . So I pulled starter and did stand alone test to make sure it was not fuse or connection tried three times and motor engaged let it sit tried again. Well nothing this time to tapped with hammer and it worked . So I think starter is gone what do you think ? HERE is good question what kind of starter am I looking for the one I have is a Delco Marine starter number reads 1998207?.

I'd have the starter you have now fixed. Marine starters are expensive.

I know the OEM Volvo ones are like $300-$400 I think Ill bring it in and have it tested maybe it is the Solenoid. I have looked around a bit and found some that say they fit the Volvo Penta but I need more in off the boat. SO I am in a delima as long as I can return the starter if the engine has oil water mix and is toast I am all right other wise words Ill be out a few hundred bucks.

What info do they need to match starter to my boat?

I have numbers on my old starter is that all they need to fit a remanufactured or after market starter?

As far as your starter goes,you can either have it rebuilt or buy a rebuilt one.I just did as I found out that mine was a auto starter.I have a merc 305 in my boat (not sure of differences with volvo).
Out on bypass 28 wright motors.I just purchased one there for 190.00.Thing looks brand new,they do excellent work there,fast.I also had them do my alt. last year for I believe 75.00.
I have a shop in manch so fell free to pm me

I bought a new starter for my Volvo 5.7 from db electrical. They have great prices. I kept my old one and am considering having it rebuilt to keep for a spare.

Took your advice and purchased a m10 for $175.00 but to no avail starter worked great but engine is toast . Got it running after a few tries but oil started spewing out of two holes by the fuel pump in front of engine not sure what they are but after I got it running for a few seconds milky oil started spewing out of the same holes.
So now I am looking around for a rebuilt engine and I find the larger engines are cheaper than the smaller ones what is up with that. Well anyways I need your guys help with this who would be a reputable engine Re builder I could get a rebuilt engine from I have a guy who will put it together for 900 bucks but if I am getting a rebuilt should I go bigger in engine size? Will that work on my drive having a bigger engine? I am willing to spend about $3500 on whole engine with install.

Well with my outdrive I don't think Ill see much difference I get on plane (or I did) pretty quick with my 305 . One other thing my 305 uses allot of gas which it should being a v8 I think a 350 would use more for no noticeable gain (unless I changed the pitch in my props) I think a 350 would not do anything noticeable. BUT if I am wrong give me the details.

Well sorry to hear about your engine.Seems you found a starter.As far as the upgrade...I believe a gm 350 would be your best bet as all your marine accessories will bolt right up,assuming there was no freeze damage to them.If i was workin steady that is what I would have done.,as my boat is underpowered for its size.Turns out that my motor is in really good shape for its age (pulled it cause of a knock, turned out to be water circ. pump,lol wish i had removed all belts and turned it over)so as work picks back up I am going to build a 350 this winter and possibly throw it in next year.
You have many options with the amount of money you're willing to spend.I would think you could get it done for well under thay price...hope everything goes well good luck...Dan

Go with the 350 if the drives are the same ratio as the 305. If not, I'd stick with the 305.
