Are you sure you have the right impeller? The wrong one would be about 1/8" too short.

Just because you got it from a dealer doesn't mean anything. What is the part number?
Yes the vanes should be bent over on one side, but is the impeller tall enough. With it pushed all the way in the housing, it should be above the surface of the housing by about 1/32". Is it?

It sounds like you need to retrace your steps and figure out which part isn't working. If it were me I would start by testing the pump:

1. Disconnect the two hoses, put a short length of hose on the inlet and drop it in a bucket of water. Run a second hose from the line out to wherever it won't do any damage. Leave the kill switch off and crank it over. If the pump works, move to step two:

2. Reconnect the "in" side of the pump and see if you are getting water from the drive. If not, your problem is between the pump and the drive. If it does work, your problem is a clog beyond the pump - start pulling off every hose you can get to to verify no clogs.

One other thought...is the drive in the water or are you running it on muffs? I've never had good luck running my volvo on muffs.

I think he already did step one, and got no water. He has a pump problem just not sure where, and obviously isn't going to check impeller height.

Update pretty frustrated now changed thermostat also bought and installed new brass pump housing tested it by connecting hose from inlet into bucket. Nothing same result no water suck out of bucket there were no pieces of garbage in thermostat area. What next?

By chance have you checked the hose connection at the other end at the transom. My clamp was loose, didn't know it but the system stayed primed and cooled fine last season. Changed impeller this year and three impellers later, new tt, and new circulation pump I climbed to the back slid the hose on tight bingo.

Ok, I was thinking about a different pump housing. Your impeller will be indented a little. You can see the groove also shown by the yellow line in the image of your housing below. That is how deep the impeller should be. What I don't understand is how you could possibly have the gap shown by the green arrow. That will kill any sucking and pumping action by the impeller. Push the impeller completely down flat in the housing and see if that gap (Green arrow) goes away.

You do have an oring on the housing I assume.

Re: volvo penta 5.0 gl overheating

Well, if it will now suck water out of a bucket, we at least know the pump is actually working.
Has the upper and lower section of the drive been taken apart? Was the drive off the boat, and if so was a new ring put around the pickup port on the pivot housing? Are the hoses all in place and clamped securely? If you have a flush hose on the engine, is the cap on tight? Do you have a Neutra Salt system on your boat?

So update the hose that goes from the pump to the drive has a black solid piece attached between it by firewall looks like a filter i think.could that be clogged or should i not bother with it its pretty hard to get too . Any one know what it is?also i put a garden hose ontpump hose and water comes through drive holes fine

Then why not start a new thread of your own with your engine and drive info and what you have done so far. Why would you think his problem is exactly the same as yours. More than one thing can cause an overheat.
