one of the things on my new to me boat was the starter was dead. you could bang it a couple times and SOMEtimes it would work but most of the time we got nothing. the bilge was submerged in water so i'm sure the starter was toasted because of that.

it's the original "red" starter and i would like to rebuild it.

currently we installed the old starter from my friends Mercruiser 8.1 mpi a while back just to water test the boat and even that starter is "weak" but works the bolt lengths were different so we had to use different length bolts to use this starter and i save the original bolts int he box with the original starter.

now that i have my original starter out and available i want to get a rebuild kit for it. can anyone point me in the right direction on a reputable rebuild kit online i can purchase?

i could just get a replacement starter but they aren't red and id like t keep the original one if possible and I do enjoy DIY

no such thing as "red" starter. that just paint

is this a direct drive or a PMGR?

if direct drive, switch to PMGR, 2x the torque, 1/2 the weight

rebuilding your starter will cost you more than a new one if it was submerged
you need a machine shop to rebuild a direct drive starter as you have to machine the field winding brush commutator.

if you really want to rebuild it, take it to your local rebuild shop.

Scott i like how you take me literally :). I know its not a red starter that its just paint.

you could be right that its its not savable but I would still like to know how to find rebuild kits. if not for this starter then one in the future. its good to know how to source rebuild kits and how to DIY them.

i just finished rebuilding the steering actuator. took about 20 min to change out all 6 seals. wasnt too bad

your comments are helpful a time so thank you.

here are pictures, im pretty sure this is direct drive not a newer PMGR but maybe someone else can ID it.

Many have bought DB Electric, should be fine
You will like that it weighs less than the old model and it will spin the motor faster
