volvo sterndrive cooling questions

Hello all,

New boater here. I just bought an older boat for little money and I'm learning as I go. It's a 1984 19' Bayliner Capri with a Volvo AQ125a/AQ270 stern drive setup in it. The raw water pump was leaking profusely so I replaced the two seals where water runs in and out of it today. Now it seems to be circulating water pretty well. You can take the cover off of the heat exchanger and see some water movement down in there, but I don't see where the water comes back out of the motor. I know with outboard motors you can see the water stream 'peeing' out but I don't see anything like that on this setup.

So here goes with the questions: Where does the raw water vent back out on this setup? How can I be sure my boat is cooling properly? Since it's a new boat to me, I don't know for sure that the temp gauge works, so I don't trust it yet. I've never ran the motor long enough for it to warm up enough to move the needle. The RPM, oil pressure, and volt gauges work, but the fuel level gauge doesn't.

I put a new battery in it and changed all the fluids. Plugs and points look good. The motor fires right up faster than any of the fuel injected cars I've got around and runs like a champ. The leg shifts nice and smoothly. All in all, things seem to be in good order. I'm just worried about the cooling.

Thanks for any guidance you can give.

Re: volvo sterndrive cooling questions

the raw water should be coming out a small Idle relief hose in the transom and out the rubber flapper on the outdrive.

Do you know if the boat has seen much salt? That can effect water flow through the exhaust. I assume you changed the impeller when you fixed the leak.

Here's a link to some info on your engine/outdrive.

type in aq125a in the engine type box, hit enter and scroll down. there is some info there.

Good luck with the new boat!!!

No, I didn't change the impeller. I'll do that. I don't know any history on the boat because I bought it from a bank after it was repo'd. I know it was a gamble but I bought it pretty cheap. We live about 350 miles from the closest saltwater so it's unlikely it's been there much. The boat had waterskis in it so I'm sure that was it's last purpose.

Thanks for the link to the volvo manual. That free document is more useful than the Seloc manual I bought the other day. Any idea where I can get one for the entire boat? I'd love to have an original owner's manual for it.

Thanks Don. Great information. This seems like a very helpful bunch around here. My pump seems to be moving water so I may be ok but I'm gonna go ahead and change the impeller just to be safe. I'm sure there will be more questions coming soon.

if you want to test out of water, just go get a plastic tub. and run a water hose into the tube with the sterndrive in the tub. Make sure you remove the prop first.
Don't start motor until the water level is over the intake slots on the outdrive.

You should see water coming out of the exaust and the flap under the sterndrive.

This is how I tested my 290 outdrive.

Here is links to the OEM service manuals. I think you will find them useful.
