Volvo SX Shift Shaft Seal Replacement

Hello. I'm working on re-sealing my SX drive. In order to replace the shift shaft seal, the manual states to use a punch to drive in a retaining pin in order to remove the klevis pin. Unfortunately, the retaining pin only went in part way and hit a hard stop before it released the klevis pin. I'm stuck.

The manual also states to flip the shaft over and drive the retaining pin back out, with a dire warning not to drive in a 2nd pin. Question--I don't see how the pin can be driven back out, the hole does not go all the way through the shaft. I think a previous owner has done me a "favor" by installing a 2nd pin.

Any ideas, or am I stuck with getting out the dremel tool and replacing the shift shaft?

Thanks.

Try a smaller diameter punch. It's a metric hole, and standard size punches just won't go through the hole.

Don--thanks for the suggestion, but the punch I was using was definitely smaller than the pin diameter.

The pin went in about 1/4" and then hit a "hard stop" and will not go any further. The klevis pin is still retained.

Open to any other suggestions you may have.

Your punch could be still too large, it is a metric diameter hole, try a smaller punch like maybe even a drill bit will push it through, the retaining pin is smaller than the hole in the shift shaft and should fall right back out after the clevis pin is removed.
