Can someone tell me what the brown/blue wire and black wire are for that comes out of the back of the trim switch connector? There is a connector that plugs into the harness, but I don't have a clue what the two loose wires are for that are attached to the connector. I'm talking about this switch:

Ayuh,.... I don't know, but I'll guess they're for a trim gauge, if so equipped,...

Bondo, the harness fits between the gauge and the switch. The two wires I am talking about are bundled together with a rubber band. The black wire is attached to the center pin of the connector (ground???) and the brown/blue wire is attached to one of the six pins that surround the center pin. Both wires have a spade female connector attached, but I'm at a loss as to where they need to be connected, if at all. Volvo Penta's schematic for the digital trim system does not address those wires.

The Brown/Blue wire would normally connect to the trim sending unit side of the trim instrument gauge.....Typically analog gauges according to a service manual I found....But I did find where Volvo does say that this trim panel can be used with their LCD display or analog gauge part number 3851787.
For SX/DP-S-drives. Shows the drive trim angle. Control unit 3855650 is suitable to operate the Power Trim. http://www.volvopentastore.com/Analo...view_id.345205
and http://www.marinepartseurope.com/fr/...ument-kit.aspx
Power Trim instrument that shows the drive's current trim angle. Conversion kit from square to round instruments.
Power Trim instrument that shows the drive's current trim angle against the transom. Important to know to get the correct time on the boat, and fuel economy.
The instrument is equipped with an LCD display and LEDs to be able to optimize the pinion angle.
872,571 is a conversion kit for the installations, the earlier square PT instrument. The kit contains besides the new PT-instrument, even escutcheon (adapter) and cabling. P

Depending on if you have trim limit or not see pages 68-73 "Trim instrument" for your Brown/Blue wire, Black would be ground.

While this trim panel switch would typically be installed at the main helm Volvo has designed it so an additional trim gauge and control panel/trim switch could be added to the Flybridge.

Are you adding this control panel switch in or was it there already?

Some info about this switch can be found starting here and ending with Member Graham R on page 9,

The analog gauge that can be used and looks like the two wires in question will connect to looking at all the photos,;)

In case it's ever needed for someone, Volvo also offers extensions and Y harnesses for this control panel to the Y Connector for Power Trim, Flybridge

Hope this all makes sense.:)

Good info Fun Times. I have that same switch that I bought a few years ago and haven't installed it yet. Since my drive is old enough not to have the mating plug, I was cutting going to cut off and use the appropriate wires.

Fun Times, the switch is new to the boat ... gas to diesel repower ... and the installation will be for a single station. All of the parts I am using are Volvo Penta. The switch fits perfectly into the trim system with the supplied plug; however, the two additional wires sent me for a loop. Should I ignore them, since I am using the Volvo harnesses required? Thanks for you input!

Thanks guys, I've never messed with the switch in question so I went looking for the info and posted most of it above.

piperca, what drive model and trim gauge do you currently have and did you plan on changing to different style gauge as they technically have two designed trim sending units...One for analog and the other for digital. Analog = 2 wire sending unit & Digital = 3 wires.

In theory you shouldn't need the two wires in question due to your trim sending unit to gauge wire should be connected to the engines 10 pin cannon plug which is normally separate from the "power" trim wires. < That is on gas engines...Not sure about the diesels 12v power plug supply.

Does the new switch plug into a wiring harness at the helm area or at the transom area? < If transom, did the switch come with an extension harness?

Fun Times, the trim system is attached to a Volvo DP-E drive. The gauge is digital. The diesel engine has a 16 pin harness, which is completely separate from the trim system. The trim switch attaches to the system at the helm and is plugged into the same harness as the trim gauge using a 7 pin plug (6 pins on the outside and one larger pin in the middle, which is the loose black wire).
