... but I do think spinning is more precise.....

Actually, you can often still spin the pushrod when you have as much as 1/4 of a turn down from actual zero lash. I did the experiment once. While tightening the nut, I spun the rod until I couldn't spin it anymore. When I backed off the nut until I felt the very first 'up and down' movement, I had loosened the nut almost 1/3 of a turn.... Since then, I have only ever used the up and down method... The spining method is flawed.

I guess we’ll have to disagree on that one.
What works for one mechanic doesn’t always work for another mechanic.

I worked with a guy that could do a Alpha transom Seal kit with shift cable, ujoints, yoke and seal in 2.1hrs. 2.4 with trim senders. I watched him and even copied the tools he had made. Part of his trick was he didn’t touch the hinge pins. Best I could do was 3.5. What worked for him sure didn’t work for me.

Learned about this too a couple of years ago when I did the top end overhaul on my 4.3 with reman heads. I tried it both ways on the 1st cyl and found that you could still spin the pushrod after all up and down play was removed. So I thought the spin the pushrod might lead to tight valves and did them all with the up and down method.
