... but I do think spinning is more precise.....
Actually, you can often still spin the pushrod when you have as much as 1/4 of a turn down from actual zero lash. I did the experiment once. While tightening the nut, I spun the rod until I couldn't spin it anymore. When I backed off the nut until I felt the very first 'up and down' movement, I had loosened the nut almost 1/3 of a turn.... Since then, I have only ever used the up and down method... The spining method is flawed.
