Aye
Fishing three to ten miles offshore of South Carolina. Best solution would be to join Sea-Tow but I like to be able to depend on myself to get home.

Tengals, Melbourne coastguard reported last year that the most common reason for rescue on port phillip bay was....
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Running out of fuel. A second motor is great but planning your fuel usage is better.

Aldo

Re: VOTE HERE

hehehehe. yep done that. Before i had a GPS, i got lost right in the main channel. Couldnt find the tooradin channel at low tide. Everyone out there didnt seem to know either. When i finally found a marker of the channel about 3Kms, the engine died and i had no fuel left. It was month and months ago, but thatyou to'Denis' i think his name was that towed us in. cheers

Re: VOTE HERE

Sounds like it's just as bad as the Hasting marina channel, I've run aground while using my GPS! (foggy night). Never been to the Tooradin channel, always thought it was to shallow.

Aldo

I'm a belt and braces bloke where my life is at risk.

All the fuel in the world isn't worth anything on a dead electrical system, a gearshift that won't engage, a broken shear pin that can't be replaced on the water, etc etc. At least until you get back to land when fuel is a useful accelerant as you carry out your threat to burn it if you live through this one.

But my cunning plan for my antique fuel guzzler is an adapter hose for the 5hp Mariner tank that will take the Evinrude hose. So the Mariner tank is both the fuel supply for the auxiliary as well as a reserve tank for the main motor. Lets me survive running out of fuel on the main tank if the big donk still works or get home on the little one if the big one dies. Without risking fuel spills transferring fuel onboard from the little tank to the big one.

I've run aground in the inshore Rhyll mooring channel in a 12' dinghy just using daylight and natural stupidity. I don't need GPS to do it! :D

Somewhere in another thread in the last couple of days I said something similar about Tooradin, but Tengals reckons it's great. I might try it one day although I prefer the south east end of Westernport.

Re: VOTE HERE

I have heard that it is a great fishing area, gotta try it one day.

On sunday I was watching 3 neanderthals (wakeboarders) syphoning fuel from a jerry can into their boat, they were using a length of fuel hose but they were jiggling it instead of sucking and syphoning. Priceless.

Aldo

i fish the south shore of long island and have to pass moriches or shinnecock inlet so i cant row my boat back.
even a 15 horse will have trouble pushing my boat against the strong current in the inlets
i use a 15 horse to push my 20ft mako if i ever need it.
never had to but its there to get home.

reeldutch

Re: VOTE HERE

Aye. Use a kicker for trolling, haven't yet (knock on polished teak) needed it for go-home.

Good piece of mind; with no motor, the Columbia runs into the Pacific Ocean with currents to Japan or South America or China or....
