The VRO pump on my 1996 Johnson 105 Jet is going out. motor is been great my mechanic wants $650.00 to replace vro. Can you just dicounect the vro and run a 50:1 mix?

Yes you can and they run just fine without it. I know that the VRO reduces oil use at low rpm. So the only drawback is a little more smell with the wind at your back while trolling. Not that jets troll very well anyways. I am not sure what the parts would cost to fix it but it doesn't look too complicated and parts are still available.

On my 115 turbojet the electrical connection to the vro is unpluged and the oil line has bolt clamped in the oil line to the motor. That is it.

How did you determine the VRO is failing? It may be as simple as removing the oil tank, cleaning the filter and gunk from the tank, checking the pulse limiter and doing an oil flow check according to the service manual.

I disconnected my VRO and started mixing my own oil and gas. I think it is a easier process.

1st - your motor doesn't have a VRO pump so I'd be looking for another "mechanic". It's an OMS pump.

2nd - I doubt seriously if it costs that much to replace the pump.

3rd - I agree with Silvertip - what makes you think it's going "out"?

4th - I'd never own another outboard without oil injection. Period.

Hmmm well according to the Cymer Evinrude/Johnson outboard shop manual. A 1997 105 Jet (60deg V6 [Except FFI Models]) do have a VRO pump pages 531-538. And running a 50:1 mix will allow me to also run my Kicker motor off the same tank. The abuse that this motors take while running on rivers is termendus

My manual just showed up today. Wanted to buy it from iboats but found it 10 bucks cheaper and free shipping at Amazon.

Since when is a Clymer manual the authoritative info source for BRP motors? And your motor, as Dhadley points out, does not have a VRO pump AND your pump does not change the oil ratio at low RPM's ... it's always ~ 50:1. BTW, third party manuals are held in very low regard around here.

Re: VRO going out

the publisher is Clymer not crysler. and the shop manuals you have do not cover jet drives for my motor. I am not noking your manual at all. But acording to my model number my boat has a vro pump unit assembly I am not removing it I am just plugging the oil line and disconecting the power. now how do i delete this thread i started.

Re: VRO going out

I have seen quite a few articles and questions on removing the VRO sytem from the boat with the OMC turbojet arrangement. I once viewed a post that identified exactly what to do. I have purchased the 4 - 7 psi electric pump and would like it if someone could guide me through the removal of the original fuel pump and oil injection system. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You'll probably have better luck if you start a new thread with your question in the title.

The VRO is bypassed/disabled on my 1987 70hpVRO Johnson & i'd never even concider "fixing" it
By pre-mixing i know all's well on oil/gas mixture every time i crank it

Re: VRO going out

I just replaced my origanal VRO in a 1985 150 GT with an OMS upgrade kit ($350 for the pump and me installing it). The VRO vs. OMS debate has been an onging issue that i have read in numerous threads. VRO is a Variable Rate Oiler and an OMS is an Oil Metering System. To me it means the same thing. I am not sure what all the acronym issues are about. We all know what is being discussed. I thought about going with the premix idea but I feel that now with the low oil alarm I have nothing to worry about. If the fuel pump is ok in yours and you want to save some money. I would give it a try.

Re: VRO going out

Not the same at all. VRO "varied the oiling" say, from 100:1 at low RPM to 50:1 at high RPM. OMS is always 50:1.

Re: VRO going out

Both methods work in my book. OMS replacement is more expensive but less messing around. Fill oil tank, fill gas tank and go boating. Premixing you have to mix the oil every time and not screw up. Tricky when filling an internal tank if your fuel gauge is not 100% accurate. I used to have the VRO on my motor but when it started failing I opted for the $80 fix and premix rather than the $500 + fix with a replacement oil mixing pump.

Re: VRO going out

How do you tell when the VRO, or OMS pumps start to go out ?
Is there a sensor or alarm that tells you?

Re: VRO going out

I would expect the shop would have OMS tests. I expect one would be to measure output gas and oil pressures.
