VRO Question 90hp 1991

i just rebuilt my carbs and now I don't have fuel to the carbs. The fuel filter is not clogged. For some reason I dont think the vro is working. I disconnected the hose on top of the vro and cranked the motor and no gas came out. Could one of the diaghrams be messed up in the vro? I believe gas should have have come out if I was cranking it. Any help is welcome.

I am trying to remember from when I disconnected the VRO on my 90HP, I thought that the gas line to the carbs came from bottom of pump to a plastic tube that T-ed off to one carb and then to the next. Also try squeezing the primer bulb and see if gas comes from the open end of the gas line then. Also be sure the vacuum line from the pump to the lower cylinder is hooked up, I think it's called a pulse hose.

Did you have fuel to the carbs before the rebuild ?? The answer to this will move everybody on to the next step. Don't go jumping at something else quite yet. One step at a time.

yes the motor was running before the rebuild. It was leaking fuel from the base plates so I decided to rebuild the carbs because the boat was sitting for a while.

to follow up on the first reply,the fuel comes in to the vro from the bottom and out through the top.

i did check to see if the limitor pulse valve is working and it's clear and it when cranking it pulsates between vacuum and short bursts of air. does anyone have any more suggestions?

Check you are connected properly.
Use this link, find your motor model and year and review the diagram.

Disconnect fuel pump to carbs line and squeeze the bulb. Does it spurt out from the pump then?

No it doesn't. Can it come out that hose if the crankcase vacuum from the pulse limitor is not working because the engine isn't running? I'm not sure if the the fuel can just free flow through VRO if pressurized by the fuel ball? Any thoughts on this. Your help is appreciated by the way.

Kenmyfam,

I believe I figured it out.... I blew out the VRO when I removed it to replace the carbs. When doing so I bet I blew out one of the diaghrams in it, which would cause it not to function. I already had it bypassed so it's time I replaced it anyway, Thanks for the help....

Seems like a good diagnosis. Rebuild or change out the pump.

Seems like it's only a $19 dollar difference if i were to get the VRO. I might as well get it and not worry about mixing anymore.

most people do not trust the VRO oil pumps...have proven to be unreliable..I would recommend going with the fuel pump only and continue premixing your fuel, then you KNOW the oil is in there. You will find very few VROs still hooked up...many were disconnected even when they were brand new.

I know, I'm still debating it. I have the warning horns if there is a problem and I can bypass it easily if I'm out on the water and need to get back.

I was never sure if the VRO was actually bad before I bypassed it. I was getting the warning horn so I figured it was either the VRO or something wrong with the oil tank, the oil tank pick-up or a crack in the oil line. Bypassing it just fixed all the problems.

You can replace it with a premix pump from a 1982 (ish) V6 motor. 150hp or similar. 3 connections on it.
1. Premixed fuel in
2 Premixed fuel out.
3. Pulse line connection.
