I recently purchased a 1993 Johnson 50 in non-working order. For the low price I knew I would be dealing with some issues. In starting to sort things out I noticed that there are some items that are used in a VRO motors such as the four pin Molex connector cable. I do not believe my motor is VRO capable motor only because there's no VRO designation on the back of the engine cover as I've seen with other VRO equipped motors. I do know that oftentimes some people strip the VRO components from their motor and run them in a more traditional manual oil mixing manner and I'm curious if perhaps this motor was once VRO and has since been converted. I guess the determining factor is our all motors sent out with the four pin Molex connector with that they are VRO are not? There is no oil tank nor is there the more complex VRO fuel pump. The model number of the motor is J50 TLETB . Thank you for your assistance .

Your motor is listed both ways. Look at the fuel connector does it have an extra hose fitting.

Its interesting that you mention that. From the fuel block, the one with three nipples which two hoses run to the carbs there was a third that wound its way back into the motor and upon initial turn over today spouted gas which obviously brought the test to a halt. The end of the hose has the markings of a hose clamp . Now if this was just over a bolt and used as more of a cap off than a actual fuel feed I have no idea . I will posit a photo in a few min .

We had small inkling when we picked up this lovely boat , motor and trailer for $ 150 that things might not be in pristine condition :) There is no thing as a free lunch but we are hoping this one won't be too expensive :) The motor is going to be transferred to this little toy and we will give the boat and trailer away.

We made some headway today and the missing component was the electric choke assy. Our local shop had a used one in stock so we are giving that a try as we speak . We also did a compression test and we are at 148 and 155 . Hopefully we will hear it run today .
