Wakeskate tether?

Hey All,

I have thinking of trying wakeskating but the few guys I work with that have done it said they did not like it because when you wipeout, you have to swim "half way across the lake" to get the skate. I have tried searching the net for wakeskate tether, but have found nothing. I can find them for surf boards, but not anything for wakeskates.

I am just wondering if anyone else has thought of this, or has it not been a problem? I guess most of the time the skate would be pretty close to you, but it could "shoot" across the lake also.

Any thoughts?

It's not really that big of a deal. Occasionally you may have to swim a little ways to get the board. I just grab onto the rope and have the boat tow me to the board if it's too far away, which isn't all too often.

In my opinion having a tether on the board seems like a serious hazard. I would not do it. Plus that would kind of defeat the purpose of a wakeskate anyways. It would be annoying at the least.

Not trying to be mean here but these guys seem pretty lazy. I mean, if you want to pursue a water sport, doesn't the "sport" part of it imply physical exertion? They might as well put some skis on the bottom of their couch and tie it to the rope.

This would cause problems a few ways. one it would get in the way when you start doing tricks and it would be a hazard for sure. I wouldn't want to bail and have the board flung back under me. That could cause major pain.

Also I have never had it go father then maybe 20 ft. You will be good without one.

Agreed. Usually the board is within 10-20 feet max of me if not right next to me. It's really no big deal.

Thanks for all the replys. I bought a wakeskate last night at West Marine. I cant find anyone that I know, even the salesman, that likes wakeskating. I just thought it would be something to possibly try since it doesnt have bindings and wipeouts should not be as bad. Im 40, so I will never be doing any jumping tricks, just riding back and forth. Anyway for only $100 its worth a try.

I wouldn't tether yourself to the board. If you were to fall and the tow rope were to get wrapped around the tether in the fall you could end up injured in the fall. With no tether this will not occur. Better to swim for the board - most of the time it's not an issue anyway.
