Re: Why OMC Engine so BAD

Why is OMC so bad to many mechanic.

beside theyre out of business and dont sale part no more???

For God's sake man..Isn't that ENOUGH reason?????:D

Why don't you take a some of this boat energy your spending and make some phone calls looking for some parts and IF you find any..Start adding up the $$$$$..

Theres sooooo many other things that can be wrong with this boat..What self respecting KNOWLEDGABLE boat owner lets fuel sit for 9 years?? What else is neglected? I would think if that big girl needs a transom..Well, I hope you have deep deep pockets of cash...

Re: Want to buy this new Boat BUT something is wrong with the ENGINE

this kind of boat is the only thing i could afford. this guy is asking 3k. but i know i could purchase it for 2k..

newer boat as big as this asking minimum 8k. dont have that much cash.

so iam thinking if i buy this boat for 2k and put another 2k thats total 4k. so i get a great engine with everything working good. or purchase a newer boat for minimun 8k and hope the last owner is telling the true..

thats my thinking!!. i like cabin cruiser. i never been outside the shore in my life. i am thinking the bigger the boat the safer iam and my family..

4K is wishful thinking. Everyone here has told you to walk away, listen to them. The boat is junk!!! Your just looking at the size, pretty colors and are having dreams about how fun it would be spending the day and sleeping on the water with your family. Save your money. The person selling that boat for 2K is crazy. Why did you ask if you allready have your mind made up...

and that`s what`s wrong with OMC

They have a strong appeal to those who cannot afford to maintain them correctly.
Many OMC powered boats pass back and forth between bargain hunters.

Each new owner quickly gets frustrated at the expensive parts, difficult adjustments, tough to find parts and lack of low cost solutions, and sells it to the next low budget owner.

Howdy,

You should listen to these guys.

Unless you can get the boat for FREE, DON"T BUY IT! And even for free, you'll put another $5000-8000 replacing the engine and drive. (do not waste your time with the 460)

I paid $5000 for the (low time) 1997 454/BravoIII to replace the POS 460 King Cobra that was in my 87 Four Winns Liberator!! and I got a SUPER DEAL!

This is the time of year (+ poor economy) that you find great deals on good boats. Keep looking! Those deals are out there, you just have to be patient.

Cheers,

You nailed it. They are like Fruit cakes. Everyone gets one and then the simply pass it along.

You need an new engine with all the bolt on's Even if you cobbled together some crappy aftermarket engine for 2k, the accessories would cost you as much as the enigne - alternator, manifolds, risers, starter etc. Then you still need a transom shield and a drive.

Lets say you went with Merc. You could get an SEI drive and shield for about 2500. So at a MINIMUM you are looking at 6k over the cost of the boat. The boat is gonna be another 2 you say. So now we are at 8k for that boat.

Now go to ebay and find an 8k boat that is already setup with serviceable power.

Look I bought a 19' bowrider hull and trailer for 200.00 last year. I was gonna repower with a new 3.0 and an SEI drive. Out the door at around 4-5k. I have an SX drive from my DP upgrade on my big boat. I have a TON of engine stuff to sell.. So I could walk away out of pocket for around 2k.

Right now I no longer plan to do that. Boat prices have come down SOOOO much that I could buy a recent repowered same model all ready to go for less.

It's what they charge you to park it in the Marina (if you don't trailer it). They usually charge by the foot.

Yeah, I sold all my King Kobra stuff too......I got a a little more than $3000 for all of it. selling it on Craigslist, Ebay and other places including to people right here on iBoats that contacted me via (unsolicited) private message etc.....

It took me about 2 years or so to sell it all.....I'm glad I was able to sell all the "junk" but I wouldn't want to do it again. I also think I would have a harder time selling King Cobra stuff now....

Your best bet is to find a boat that already has the "right" engine & drive (newer Merc/Volvo)

Many OMC powered boats pass back and forth between bargain hunters. So true, especially here in the NW. When will people learn there is no such thing as 'cheap boating'???? 'nutcase

Free: if you park it in your back yard.

Cheap: if you park it somewhere else and the person that owns that property doesn't charge much.....

I think he is smoking something...

He has already been advised to take a boating course. He has these big plans to rebuild big boats, yet he has no money to do it with nor does he know how.

I think he needs a smaller (18' runabout) boat to get his feet wet, learn about boating and how to maintain them, then as he learns and his experience grows, he can look toward the project boats...

Just my opinion...
