Hi Dwayne. I have a 1950 model Sea King and I think it's the same as your '49 model. You need to take the prop off and there is a sleve around the prop shaft with 2 screws holding it on. If you take those two screws out the sleve will come out and you should see, fitted onto the prop shaft, a round rubber thing shaped sort of like a Q. A new one can be obtained from Twincityoutboard.com<br /><br />Hope this helps

That's right Paul. The impeller is tough, but the 2 stroke oil that drains down there breaks down the rubber after a while. At least that was the way mine was when I got it.
