Warm up time.

I am going up to get my boat out of the water tommorow.<br />The water is probably about 40-45 F.<br />How long should I A:idle B: putter in gear before I flog the crap out of it?<br /><br />Oops '90 omc 65 hp

I would not run motor above 3500 rpm for a least 3/4 of a mile or more. Allow plenty of warm up and your motor will thank you with longevity.<br /><br />Hard acceleration on cold motors tends to score up cyl walls and damage pistons. Alum from pistons will rubb off onto cyl walls and be caught by rings. If rings happen to catch you could break a rod or worse. Alum pistons heat up faster than the steel sleeves.<br /><br />I always allow motor to warm up for 10 min at rpms under 2500. Then I run it as I wish. (Make sure your stats are working properly as well)<br /><br />Thats my two cents worth, Hope it helps<br /><br />SRP71

Thanks.<br />I usually putter for a few mins so it doesn't cold sieze.<br />It's got a new stat and appears to function well in the summer.<br />10 min's it is. I'll watch it idle from the comfort of the cottage.
