DO NOT mention to your wife how proud you are of your 15 year old washing machine that has faithfully washed countless loads of work clothes of yours and other things for the household. If you do you are asking for it. I did it yesterday and my machine of the vintage mentioned politely croaked on that very day.

Figured the drive belt had given up. Finally figured how to disfigure it and loa and behold, no belt.

Well got outta the new thing purchase without too many bruises but it looked bleak for awhile. Seems the lower model units nowadays have enough goodies to satisfy the not too pickey female purchaser. Figured I paid 2x for a new one what a repair job would have cost me for the old one. Couldn't pass that up.

Mark

Re: Washing Machine

The newer ones have a drive coupler just like your boat. Two plastic pieces sandwiched between a rubber donut. Connects motor to transmission. Cheap and easy to fix. I have been keeping my old Whirlpool alive for years now. Wife wants the new Whirlpool front loaders. I say "when the old ones die." Too bad I won't let them. :)

Re: Washing Machine

Having come up the hard way, we lived off rejects (washers included) for most of our 45 years of marriage. It was a continuous chain of things dieing and if you fixed the belt, the water pump would go out, then the lid switch, then the timer, then the feet rusted off.

Since I am able to do better now (kids grown and outta da house), and lazier than when I was young, I don't go thru that anymore....besides I got my clothes washed yesterday afternoon and to figure out what to fix and find the parts......who knows how long that would take. Then there is the problem of did I order and get the right parts, was that the problem? Yuck!

Now I can go fishing!

Mark

Re: Washing Machine

From our local paper today:

A washing machine exploded when someone tried to clean their paint-stained clothes with lacquer thinner. The fumes collected inside the machine and sparked the blast, which blew out windows and knocked a wall askew. No one was hurt.

I wonder if she'll get a new machine

Re: Washing Machine

Our old Maytag washer and dryers, didn't really went caput, just a nuisance, making banging noise when spinning (on the washer). I probably could have fixed it, but like TexasMark, this old body doesn't have that much energy like it used to.

We went ahead got a new pair, the new Front loader is insteresting, but cost more; heck, the old one lasted over 30 years, since we got our 1st child; our new pair: another Maytag top loader! If it'll last only half as long as the old one, I'll be happy..... :)
