Okay fellow boaters here we go on another project and need advice before I dig in and make mistakes.
I have an older merc 4 cylinder 488 r model off a 1984 sea ray.
Have been adding water each time I go out. From a small amount to a gallon.
I check all fluid levels each time and have my eyes always checking gauges during use.
Dived into correcting and discovered leak seems to be around gaskets on circulating pump covers. Pump is cooling fine. But hard to really see exactly were leak is from.
Any of you boaters know the 488r engine .
From looking at job power steering pump and stator partly blocks easy removal of circulating pump covers.
Is this correct ??? While doing I intend to change impeller. According to shop manuel there is a seal??? Does the seal have to be machine shop pressed?
Any advise on what to expect is appreciated
If I have to remove stator I want to get rid of this system and put in an alternator. Do any of you fellow boaters have any resonable conversion kits.
I see them on ebay including alternator around 425.00
Thanks
