Okay fellow boaters here we go on another project and need advice before I dig in and make mistakes.
I have an older merc 4 cylinder 488 r model off a 1984 sea ray.
Have been adding water each time I go out. From a small amount to a gallon.
I check all fluid levels each time and have my eyes always checking gauges during use.
Dived into correcting and discovered leak seems to be around gaskets on circulating pump covers. Pump is cooling fine. But hard to really see exactly were leak is from.
Any of you boaters know the 488r engine .
From looking at job power steering pump and stator partly blocks easy removal of circulating pump covers.
Is this correct ??? While doing I intend to change impeller. According to shop manuel there is a seal??? Does the seal have to be machine shop pressed?
Any advise on what to expect is appreciated

If I have to remove stator I want to get rid of this system and put in an alternator. Do any of you fellow boaters have any resonable conversion kits.
I see them on ebay including alternator around 425.00

Thanks
al in Orlando

Re: water circulating pump

Welcome aboard.

My family will be in Orlando Christmas.

Know where i can get some cheap Disney tickets?

Anyway to your problem, that engine mounted water pump has to come out.

First sign that the water pump went is leaking, might not be any vanes left.

Some people hate that motor, others say they like it.

There is a post here about a cheap way to convert your setup to a alternator mounted on a bracket. I'll look for it and see if i can find it.

That was a very bad design, i was looking around for a replacement 4 banger and could have had a few for almost free but i passed them bye.

Here is a link that the master Don S posted for manuals.

The circulating pump does not have the rubber impeller in it. That impeller is in the raw water pump in the outdrive.

I'm fairly sure the pully has to come off, but not the stator.
The seal should be easy to knock out and install by tapping it in with a hammer.

Do a seach on breezeworks for speedi sleeve.unfortuitly it timing cover needs to come off to replace the seals.
Breezeworks also has alt mounts for 80bucks.
