yep.. I agree.

I'm just trying to think of ways for him to save some money on this repair. A slide hammer can be borrowed from local auto parts stores (autozone will lend you one for free).. I'm thinking that if you are real nice, your marine shop that's been ripping you off could maybe lend you a couple of specialty tools.. or rent them to you for a 12-pack :)

I dunno about needle nose to remove the brass nut on the shift cable. Those are usually in there with thread locking compound, so I don't see how needle nose pliers will do anything but strip the hell out of the soft brass head on the nut. Get the proper tool, or make one by welding a couple nuts atop the proper deepwell socket that fits on the nut.

Bellows expander helps a lot but its not required if you are willing to fight a little with it to get it on there. Try warming the exhaust bellows up in some hot water just before you install it to soften up the rubber and make it easier to work with.

You only need the hinge pin tool if you plan on removing the bell housing.

Re: water coming in- transom pic added

I am in the process of replacing the that same bellows. the lower unit has to come out, the the shifter cable needs to come out, the gimbal bearing is most likely bad. the total for parts right now is at $300. the gimbal bearing itself is $100. the u-jount bellows is $100. the other two--25 & 40. the water hose is a 2-ply hose, $15. not a bad job, if u take u time and go slow. My boat is a 96 Maxium. 4.3. I have pics, not here at work. good luck.

Whoah man, you got hosed!! That entire kit goes for about $100 on eBay.

I think there is a substitute for the hinge pin tool, but I think you can get it fodr under $10. .
The substitute is a 1/2" allen wrench. But the hinge pin tool works the best with a breaker bar.

As far as the exhaust bellows, you mean to tell me that I have been stuck not going on the boat for almost two months because I can't get that stupid thing on the outdrive side?!:mad:
I wish I would have known that before. How many people on here have left theirs disconnected on the outdrive side?

Re: water coming in- transom more pics added

Well i thought i would give a little update so far. It's not going so well. I put every thing back together yesterday with just the shift cable bellow and had it running nice in the driveway shift cable adjusted. i did that because i knew i was going to have to wait a couple of weeks to get all the parts.

Anyway i decided today to go down to the river drop it in on the trailer start it up and just check every thing out. You know see if i but it together the right way. And what do ya know still tons a water coming in and the bilge pump isn't working now:(. Glad i was just doing it from the trailer.:) The water was coming in from the prot side now. I must of just missed this the last time when i saw the water coming in from the starboard side because of the shift cable bellow.

So back out of the water and back home to tear it down. Decided to tear the whole thing down this time and just wait till i get all the parts. Outdrive off and the shaft bellow was totally dry same with the shift bellow. So i stoped there and decided to check the Lower exhust tube. Bingo, Took off the upper and intermedit tubes and the lower one is loose *** hell. I don't know if it's broke or just loose. So thought i might be able to see what's the deal if i pull the bell houesing off. Got it all off and cann't see a thing damit.

So it looks like i'm going to have to pull the engine. It doesn't look that hard. Lookds to be 1 pig tail, postive wire solenoid, ground, a couple of more wires, fuel line and the water line. But i only have access to a normal cherry picker not an a-frame so i hope i can just lift it up enuff to get it out of the bilge. That way i have room to work.

But there was thing that did go pretty well and that was pulling out the gimble bearing. Figured since i got the bell off still going to change all the bellows, shift cable, and bearing so i know when it was done. The bearing came out with 3 pulls on the 5lb slide hammer:).

Was your leak happening with the motor off? Could it be a damaged hose that?s actually dumping water inside when running?

yeah it was leaking when motor was off and on. i can wiggle the lower exhaust tube real easy about a quater inch back and forth i guess. Any one know the price of that. i keep searching it. The only thing that come's up is the intermedeit tube. And what could have cause that to break. Is there a chance that it damaged the transom? The transom lookes good from out side no stress cracks and sound really solid.

Do you mean the exhaust tube as in the rubber exhaust bellow or the metal pipe that connects to your risor and manifold and carrys the engine exhaust from the engine down to the transom? (Y-pipe on V6 or V8 engines).

If it's the metal pipe, it mounts to the transom assembly, not to the transom. So if it was loose due to a bad transom, you'd see the entire transom assembly wiggle around. In this case, you may get lucky and just have to tighten the bolts if they came loose. Worst case scenario, if the pipe itself is leaking, you have to buy one on ebay.

On a positive -- all of the parts that you are dealing with right now are very important parts and do have to be changed out sometimes, so it's excellent that you are learning about your boat and how all of these parts work together.

Is this the exhaust pipe that is leaking?

Re: water coming in- transom more pics added

yep thats the part. I got the motor out today and guess what that lower exhaust pipe is just fine. The bolts that hold it on were really loose and i mean really loose. I didn't even need a ratchet to take'em off. Just put a socket on the end of an extension and turned em out.

Pulling the engine was really easy:) i was suprised how simple it was to get out.
All in it took me prob 2 hrs start to finish. That was disconnecting every thing and going over to the neighbors house getting the cherry picker cutting a link of the chain so we could shorten it up and looking for bolts.

There was one thing that i did wrong though i pulled the lag bolts that mount the motor mount to the floor. Was pissed when i saw that single bolt on top of that a-frame mount. So what i need to know is should i change that
o-ring while i got it off and how do i fix those holes that the lags came out of so i can screw them back it. And any thing else i should may be check out while i got the engine out. thx

While the engine is out, you could change your oil using the actual oil drain plug instead of having to suck it out like usual. You could check your oil pan make sure it's ok.

I'm glad this has turned into an inexpensive repair for you. And, as I said before, you've gained a lot of experience in the meantime.

Re: water coming in- transom more pics added

thanks yeah i think i will change the oil while i have it out good idea.
And boy did i learn a lot about my boat. I knew nothing when i started this project. Now i know how to pull the outdrive, the bell houseing, even the engine:). I have learned so much from all the reading and you guys.

So all you first timers out there that don't know if you can do this kind of thing. Read this Post all the way and you will see how much i have learned. because i didn't even know what all the parts were called when i started. But i still don't know which side is port and which side is starboard:p

If your boat is run in saltwater at all, clean and paint your pan especially if it has rust spots on it.

Easy way to remember port and starboard. Left and port both have 4 letters.
