Water from Exhaust port

I have a 15hp Johnson, 1982. Prior to a recent head gasket replacement, I would see small amounts of water coming out of the exhaust port on the upper third of the leg, to the stern. After gasket replacement, the exhaust is dry. A buddy of mine has a 9.9hp, similar year Johnson and his shoots water out the same port (actually there's 2 on his) like a water hose.

First off, am I right to call this an exhaust port? Second, is this an indicator of something specific? I have my speculations, but I want to know what you guys think.

Thanks.

If you replaced the head gasket, the likely culprit (for the blown gasket) was overheating and that is caused by a failing impeller which would explain the lack of visible water spray.

I don't think I was clear, or I just don't understand. My real questions were whether or not there shoud be water coming out of this hole(s), if so how much, and if not then what would it indicate of if there is.

Thanks.

I would expect to see at least some water out of the exhaust relief as shown in the video. Notice the mist? I like to run my motor deep in a barrel of water to ensure the water pump is doing it's job. Also, check the cylinder head temperature with your hand (for a count of 3) or using thermometer as shown.

I would expect to see a strong mist from there if running in a barrel with high water level. Not so much if on muffs. Rick.

Water mists out of there after the thermostat opens, usually 30 seconds or so after starting. Pre '77 motors didn't have a 'pee' indicator, the only way you knew it was pumping through was by the mist out of the exhaust port circled..

On muffs you really have to rev em to get it to come out that hole. In water it comes out on my motor 20 or so second after start up.

When you say you really have to rev em to get " it "to come to come out that hole. Do you mean water or mist? I have a 1970 9.5 evinrude model # 9022a,should i be seeing a water stream or mist when testing in a tank? Also do i have the motor in neatural or in gear when testing?I'm a novice at this & all help will be appreciated.

9.5 is different, you should see water coming out of the hole at the back of the leg.

i have an 83 15hp, should be the same as your 82, after reading your post and thinking about it.... here are my observations

(a) when you 1st start the motor, within a second there should be a strong jet of water out of the pee hole on the rear starboard side.
(b) as the motor begins to come up to temperature and the thermostat opens (this is assuming your on the water) water should start (a lil at 1st then more as it warms further) to come out of the hole at the rear that you are talking about, this lets you know your thermostat is doing its job.
(c) you will also note that as there is more water coming out of the exhaust port there is less force to the pee stream.

on my model the exit water tube (not sure of correct name) is inserted into the exhaust port and this guides the water coming out of the warm block out the exhaust port (i think this is actually an indicator port). There is never a steady stream like a hose from my experience just a fine spray to a heavy spray. as in neutral most if not all exhaust gasses escape out of this hole, as you accelerate you will note that most exhaust gasses escape out of the prop instead, and some still escape with a spray of water out the exhaust port.

All this is assuming that you have an impeller in good shape and your thermostat is doing its job.

hope some of this was a help.
