water/fuel seperator

I'm installing a new water/fuel separator in my boat,the thing is i need to know do you install the fuel line with the primer bulb before the fuel filter or after the filter?Maybe it doesn't matter,who knows but i like to know how most people install them.It's going on a 20hp 4stroke suzuki.Thanks.

I installed mine on the transom after the primer bulb so when I replace or drain my cartridge I can use the primer bulb to re-fill it....works fine this way....

I see what your saying,so just cut the fuel line in half and and just hook the the first part of the fuel line up without the primer bulb to the in part and the rest of the line including the primer bulb on the arrow going to the engine,wouldn't it fill up the fuel filter either way though?The way you did it was the way i was thinking but i think either way the gas will be filtered right.

The other thing i realized is the line from the gas tank to the bulb is 4ft long and after the bulb is only 2ft which doesn't leave much room from the outlet arrow to the engine.

I put the bulb on the fuel tank side. The bulb pumps liquid much better and faster than it does air.

Sorry one more question?I am going to mount it on the back of my transom as we all know it's just a bit slanted,will that affect the way it works or can it be mounted on a slight slant with no issues?That seems to be the only place i can put it to keep it out of the way of everything.

it will be fine, lots are mounted on the transom.

Measure, cut and mount carefully on the inside of the transom, making sure that the fuel lines don't kink or rub as you move the motor from side to side during normal operation....the old carpenter's rule: measure twice and cut once.....

Didn't the w/f Sep. "kit" come with instructions? I am planning on installing one myself, so i just googled it. The instructions said for an O/B install it between the tank and the bulb. Last time I did a custom tank install I got hose from the local dealer and cut it exactly to fit, so you don't have to worry about your existing hose.

YUP!! to jims123. I would think having the bulb before the separator would leave junk from the tank in the bulb affecting the operation of valves in the bulb.

Well the debate i hear is it's better to push fuel through the filter rather then pull it through having the bulb after the filter as you stated to do,so there is no junk in the bulb.Makes sense to me what your saying to put it after the filter as the filter will take all the junk out and the bulb will always be clean.I guess this is just all preference on how you want to do it,seems like there is no wrong or right answer.

Yes it did,it just said cut the line in half and install but it didn't specify whether to put the bulb before or after the filter that's why i asked this question.

Before the filter and if you have big enough junk in your tank to affect the bulb, you have bigger problems.

The tank doesn't have to be bad to want to use a water fuel separator . It is insurance that ALL your system is clean and free of water and debris. Why would you want to take a chance that your bulb has moisture or particles in it ? same as you wouldn't want any in your fuel pump. On a fast river, you would not want your bulb to not pressure up your system because of a stuck valve. Think of your bulb as the primary fuel pump.

Ok so the bulb before the filter,got it.My tank is 100% brand new to so i'm not worried about any nasty stuff in it as of now.I also don't leave the fuel tank out in the elements i store it in my fl room,a screen room that is clean.I get whay your saying though.I also use 100% free ethanol gas but that doesn't mean things still can't happen.I also use ring free from yamaha and what i think is the best stabilizer on the market because iv'e used them all and this stuff which is called k100 is the best imo.I use it in my car,lawn mower,boat,etc......It really does last well over a yr unlike startron and stabil marine,etc....I have used them all and wasted money till i found this stuff.It's at k100.com

I have a guy telling me to carry an extra oring.I don't know what for besides the one that's on the filter itself.He said they dry out easy and leak.I don't know how they can leak in 3-6mths.Plus if you coat it with oil shouldn't that help from that if not eliminate it completely.Is the oring removable because it seems to be glued on the fuel/water separator.

Before the filter is internet "opinion". The other way is manufacturer's recommendation. Whether you believe the internet or the engineers is your option.

Non-ethanol gas is what we all used to use, and back in those days a gunked up system was common. E-10 will guarantee a clean system and thus no problems with the filter anyway. Also, minor water entrainment will be absorbed by the alcohol.
