I have a 2001 Volvo Penta 5.0 gl-a was fresh water boat but just took it out in salt water. Out on the water the boat got hot up to 200 degrees and the engine carpment was smoking because of the bellows. Shut the boat off got towed to the launch let the motor cool down slowly. The next day replaced the bellows and impeller but now I’m getting water in cylinders. Talked to mechanics and they said it sounds like risers and manifolds, took them apart and they aren’t rusty or corroded. Could the riser to manifold gasket go bad with the temp. I also did a compression test cylinder. HEAD GASKET OR RISER MANIFOLD GASKET
cylinder 1-145
#2-190
#3-150
#4-130
#5-145
#6-160
#7-165
#8-180

bellows would not cause an overheat. lack of cooling flow will.

check your impeller and the water inlet casting on the drive

yes, the riser gasket was spit out due to temp overheat. additionally the rubber hoses in the exhaust were probably burnt on the inside

depending on how long you ran the motor, you can also warp cylinder heads, egg-shape the cylinders, spit out the head gaskets.

remember, exhaust gases with water are only 220-230F exhaust gasses without water the temperature is 900-1200F

check your compression gauge. a brand new motor will only have 150 psi of cranking compression numbers. anything higher needs to be suspect of the gauge, or you have water or oil in the cylinders

do a cooling system pressure test. it should hold 15psi forever

do a leak-down test

acetone test the manifolds and elbows

Yeah I replaced the impeller after it over heated, it was toast. I shut the boat off about 175 degrees and it just kept climbing to 200. I was only on the water for about 15 mins. so my question is with that heat the gaskets can fail between the risers and manifolds. And have you even heard or used Glm gaskets are the good or garbage?

GLM = Good Luck Marine. not worth used toilet paper

manifold to elbow gaskets should be Volvo Penta if its a stock manifold and stock elbow

did you get all the missing parts out of the remainder of the system?

you should pressure test the motor

Ok I’ll go get the Volvo gaskets tomorrow. I did get all the other pieces out luckily they were all in the pump still. I’ll youtube how to pressure test the cooling system. If the pressure drops during the test what should I look at then?

The stickies at the top of the forums cover pressure testing

I got it all fixed it was just the riser gaskets. Changed the oil still a little milky should I be safe to run it or should I try to change it again

run it hard to get some heat into the oil and the little bit of moisture should come out. if the oil gets more milky, you still have an issue
