Water in Pressure tank

Ok guys here's another question. First of all I have a 1956 evinrude bigtwin 30HP model 25022. This motor works on a pressure tank setup. I have checked the coils and points. I have inspected the impeller and repaired impeller housing. I had it running but EXTREMELY rich. After about 10 minutes of feathering the throttle to keep it going the water in the barrell was completely black. So note that it was running. Then I did a carb rebuild with a new kit and I think I did a good job with that (Poor directions come with kits). So yeah, after the carb rebuild I tried again, first pull I got a sputter then Nothing after that. I took a gas siphon and puled some gas out of the tank into a spray bottle, and wuddya know, two layers of colors. So I drain the float bowl into a seperate bottle, and wuddya know, two seperate colors. Just to be sure I took some gas from my weedwhaker can and put it in a cup and added some water, and wuddya know looks like the other two. I had to be sure because I havent ran into this problem before.
So I had the motor running, then I did a carb rebuild. I bought the motor and tank on fathers day and can't remember if anything was in the can before I added gas. But since water sits on the bottom I would think it would'nt have ran at all to begin with. So my dillema. I'm wondering if it's possible that the pressure system for the tank is somehow pumping water into the tank too. I'm not too familiar with these and I'd hate to waste gas by trying again without knowing. I'm posting a pic with this to show how much water was in the tank with a gallon of gas. To me it seems a bit more that condensation. I just want to know what could cause this much water short of pouring it in the tank myself.
Thanks guys Kris

I've never heard of that happening and knowing how the pressure system works I cant see how it is possible that water would be put in the tank from the engines doing. I believe your problem is elsewhere. I would put fresh gas in and try it again. If it happens again then something very strange is going on but at least you will know where to look...

It is VERY possible. Look at the big exhaust cover on the side of the cylinder block. You will see the edge of two gaskets where it bolts to the block. Between the gaskets is a plate. Early plates were made of aluminum and would corrode holes through them. They were replaced by stainless steel ones that were far better.

If the plate is holed, cooling water will squirt into the exhaust ports and go all through the powerhead, including the crankcase. Guess what?---The air to pressurize the tank comes from the crankcase.

This is a dead serious matter. Water in the crankcase will cause unrepairable harm. I have no way of knowing how long it has been going on or whether damage has occured.

You can tell if your plate is aluminum or stainless by the thickness. The stainless ones are thin, maybe just a hair thicker than a credit card. The aluminum ones are considerably thicker, probably 3/32 - 1/8 inch.

If it is ingesting water, you will also find it in the cylinders and spark plugs.

Well I took the cover off and the plate inside looks A-OK to me, but the 50 yr old gasket didn't want to be parted from it's home. Any other place water could intrude the crankcase from? Do I need to to a gasket set on this?

You can buy gasket material and make one... Or buy the gasket from the OMC dealer...
