In the process of replacing lower shift cable, I find the water intake hose has a 1" tear near the top clamp, it looks as though the grounding cable cut through it, fortunately I never had any cooling problems. This may sound hoakey but I roughed up the damaged area used cleaner and vulcanizing glue and hot patched it as if it were a tire, the rest of the hose looks like new except for a divit where the hose rubs at full tilt and I put a patch over that too for added protection. I figure it's got to be better than than running it with a 1" tear through, I would just go out and buy a new hose but just don't have another 40.00 to blow on this job.

Ditto Bond-o! :D Replace that hose! and also be careful not to kink it, sometimes that happens also.

bilge pump? whats that got to do with water intake hose, I think I could idle around without the hose, just as long as that upper drive remains submerged, but when you come up on plane, thats when the broken hose would start sucking air, although I never had a single problem with the broken hose that I didn't even know was bad.

the lower unit has a hole in it too, it doesn't sink the boat. The hose is little more than a route for the water to flow up to feed the engine's cooling loop.

I bought the hose for 24.99 about a month ago ... was in stock at the local boat shop.

Re: Water intake hose must not be too critical

now that sounds reasonable, the guy out by me thinks every OMC part he's got is the last one in the world, had one on the shelf wanted wanted 53.00 for it, funny thing is he wanted 175.00 for the shift cable and I got it for 86.00 so it makes sense that the hose can be had for exactly half of what he was asking, just like the cable this guy is doubling his prices.
