I am going to install a water pressure guage on my '97 150 FICHT. Will a 30psi guage work or does this engine require a 60psi guage? Thanks

Re: Water Pressure Guage

One more question. Since I bought the correct guage I am going ahead and installing it. The instructions that came with the guage are less than helpful. I think I found the right place to connect the hose to the engine but I just wanted to verify that I'm on the right track. On the top of the block on the starboard side right under the TPS there is a plug in the block. Is this the correct place to connect the hose for the guage? Thanks again!

Sound like your on the right track by installing to the plug on the block.

Others may not like my method, but here it goes. I cut my water line with a box cutter. Then I installed one of those "T" fittings used in landscape drip lines. From the "T" I ran a line to my guage in the dash. I did use a little sealant around the "T", and I regularly check for leaks. I am now almost an entire season with this installation, and it is working great and leak free. My pressure guage shows a steady 23 psi. I would never advise someone to deviate from the manufacturer instructions, but in this case, I believe my method to be adaquate. You can stick with the manufacturer instructions, but I thought I would offer what I consider to be a suitable alternative.

Installing the gauge in the tell-tale is perfectly acceptable.

I installed the gauge and it's working fine. I installed the hose in the block with a brass fitting that came with the gauge.I have 2 psi @ idle and 22psi @ WOT. Thanks for your help.

2 psi at idle seems low. Did you tee the line, or go direct to the block?

Good point. Might not be a new pump.....Now is a good time to change out the pump so you have a good baseline reading. Then you will know by the pressure when it's getting weak...

I didn't see any line that I could tee. There was a plug in the top of the block under the TPS. I removed the plug and installed the fitting in it's place. Pressure comes up to 4-5psi just above idle (1000 rpm or so).

The pump isn't new. In fact, i think it's safe to day the pump is original - 92hrs on engine. I have a pump kit and t-stats that I will be installing this week.

If its the original, your definately running on borrowed time.

I change my pump , every two years, regardless of pressure.

Cheap insurance.

Thanks to all for your help! I installed the water pump kit and t-stats this weekend. Now the water pressure is 9psi @ idle and 27psi @ WOT.

Your readings are almost exactly the same as mine, on a 115 johnson.

I'd say your good to go . Have fun.
