Water Pump Case Crack. Is it game over for this motor?

I was going through and cleaning the lower unit/gear case tonight. I think I may have found the first bit of bad news for this motor, 1956 Evinrude BigTwin 30hp. After I took the water pump impeller out and cleaned the case I noticed some cracks/buldges. I'm assuming this isn't good, but how bad is it? Can it be repaired, does it need to be? I didn't pry on anything to get the water pump out that would have caused this. After removing the impeller I simply lifted a thin piece of metal that's under the impeller and I noticed the buldges/cracks.

First picture is top view (see buldge at 3 o'clock and one at 7 o'clock).
Second picture is side view of 3 o'clock buldge.
Third picture is other side of 3 o'clock buldge.
Fourth is side view of 7 o'clock buldge.

If I have to replace the housing and if it's exspensive then then it may be game over for this motor.

I would agree with Haffiman. Not critical damage. While the method he suggested will certainly work I'm not sure I'd even go that far myself. It looks to me like water got in those compartments and then froze at some point. Could have happened years and years ago and has been working fine since. If it were me I think I'd just put it together with a new water pump and see what happens. If it pumps water good and doesn't fill up the lower with water you're good to go.

Cheers......................Todd

I can't see where that will cause any issue. Even if you broke those off the rest of the way, it won't have any effect on the water pump. The most important thing is the surface looks good and the threads in the holes are good. Once the wear plate is set down and the water pump assembly goes in, those two places won't even cause any problems. So, it's all good. You can repair it, but there isn't any need.

Thanks for the replies.

I was showing my dad this evening the cracks and that's kind of what we were thinking. We put the wear plate in and it seemed to us that those voids were blocked off and not used. But, being a rookie, and having no clue how the water flows through the pump, because the manual I got sucks to high heaven, we weren't sure. I appreciate you guys putting me at rest.

The piece that is at 3 o'clock I think I might just break off. It's cracked pretty bad. I was interested in Haffiman said, but I'm worried about ruining the seals that are in place with the heat.

The main reason for that 'design' is for the different compartment walls to give support to the pump housing plate so it does not flex down. You may even fill up the 'empty' compartments with Plastic Padding, chewing gum or whatever and obtain the same.
