Re: Water Pump help?

if no water is coming out the back, it isn't working.

If powerhead is too hot to touch, it isn't working.
You should warm the motor up, then be able to put your hand on it for 3-4 seconds.

Thank you,

Is a stupid question but I was checking because I have a mercury and it spits the water very good versus this one I can see the hole where the water comes out. Are there any tips or infor that you know in how to replace the water pump.

Thanks

My 20HP Chrysler just trickles water out of the small hole, but most of it comes out near the bottom of the exhaust housing which is further down. If yours is like mine, the anatomy of this area will become apparent when you take it apart to service the water pump.

There's a sticky at the very top of this forum that gives a good general description of what you're trying to do...

While you're at it... Drain the lower unit. If it's milky, it means there's water in it. You can address that problem while you have the lower unit off.

Thank you for the reply; I believe the concept of both is very similar. But my 35 hp does not shut any water from the hole below the motor. The hole is around 3/4 dia. to 1 inch. I can insert my thumb finger on it and no signs of water. Also on the top of the motor there is a transparent hose coming out of the thermostat and no water too. I think I am just going to open the water pump and see if something is not normal. I will probably replace the thermostat just to make sure. I don?t know where the water pump or impeller is but I will see if I can get a breakdown. I think is under the engine because that area is protected by a casing with two bolts so if you any info that can help me, I will really appreciate that.

Thank you for your time.

Re: Water Pump help?

You'll need to drop the lower unit to service the water pump. If the link I provided does not give enough detail, you should purchase a manual for your engine. The procedure will be layed out in good detail and there will be pictures.

Also check out this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB0ztSvLqig
It's not the same engine as yours, but the process is similar on all outboards. This will give you a better general idea. Do some more searches on youtube for replace impeller. There are several videos on there. Again, this is just to get a general idea about the process.

*The impeller is part of the water pump. Replacing the impeller in your water pump is a routine maintenance item. You would only need to replace other parts of the water pump if there was a problem with them. Most often, the impeller is the only thing that needs replacing. You should do this once a season.
