he can't get the upper and lowers back together.

1. Remove the rubber o-ring on the driveshaft.
2. try again, make sure you have your water tube lined up and your not jamming it.

Re: water pump impeller cant put back on

you can try locking the drive in FWD gear and when you get it close, bump the prop CCW and see if that gets it lined up.
Other than that just keep trying but put it down if ya start to get frustrated with it.
If it were easy mechanics wouldn't exist.

Re: water pump impeller cant put back on

do you have the water pipe in the water pocket cover and the guide tube in the water pump housing? greased the ends of the water pipe and water pipe guide tube? that helps a little. i've had a miserable time doing your project too and have always felt it was the water pipe and guide tube that were stopping me from mating the two. you'll feel the splines on the drive shaft line up and it'll go some, but that darn water pipe seems to stop me.
it's just plain miserable, imho, to mate them while on the boat. keep trying and you'll eventually get it.

when ya get tired of trying though, take the upper off and put them on the bench. bet ya mate them 1st or 2nd try by yourself. + they're not heavy when laying on the bench.. it's like night and day the two different ways of mating them together.....

Re: water pump impeller cant put back on

what did i do wrong now
maybe nothing wrong... it needs to meet this criteria

fwd= prop locks ccw and ratchets cw
neutral= prop free wheels both directions, no sound or feel to it
rev= prop locks cw and ratchets ccw

the ratcheting sounds is the spring loaded clutch dog engaging a gear but being turned the wrong way. the gear teeth act like ramps and the clutch dog climbs the ramp and then falls off then end of the gear tooth. the spring pushes the clutch dog to the bottom of the next tooth and it starts all over again. when turned the right way, the undercut gear teeth of the clutch dog and either fwd or rev. gear engage and lock together because they are undercut and want to stay in mesh.. the harder you turn it, the tighter they want to engage..

So i guess i spoke to soon

I put the hose on the outdrive and started her up and sure enough no water is coming to the engine or at least i dont think there is

need to verify it isnt pumping first....loosen the clamp where the water enters the engine, start it pull off hose and see if its pumping or not. just dont run longer than you have too.

Re: water pump impeller cant put back on

which way were you turning the driveshaft (vertical shaft) when you pushed the pump housing on. Was it clockwise or counter?

Re: water pump impeller cant put back on

i pulled the hose off that comes from the drive to the engine and nothing

this is the same thing it was doing before i did the impeller so there has to be something else going on

Re: water pump impeller cant put back on

ok when i turn it on and the water hose is attached i see the water coming out of the shifter bar that goes into the lower end does that mean that i have the water tube in wrong or that something else is wrong

Re: water pump impeller cant put back on

maybe the water pipe didn't mate at one end or the other. if it were me doing it. that'd be my guess for a failur i'd do. like i said, i always have trouble getting the upper and lower to mate while on the boat and the water pipe is what causes me trouble best i can figure.

since it was this way to start with. is the water hose kinked that moves the water from the drive to the gimble housing?

did ya get the steel plate in right. with the lip pointing the right way? i think down?

clockwise is correct when installing the water pump housing.

any debris from the water pickup slots or that cavity leading up to the water pump?

got enough water pressure at the house?
