I recently bought a 53 evinrude 15hp and got it going pretty nice today. It had a problem with the water pump and i tore the bottom end apart the other night. The gasket between the top impeller housing and the verticle tube was pretty ratty so i put some 100% silicone to it.
Like i said got her going earlier today and she does pump but here's the story... when i take the water drain plug out it shoots pretty good little stream, but when running the discharge port doesn't appear to have all that much water exiting. The hole is roughly 3/8" but deff. isn't close to half that flow.... this is my first outboard... is that an adequate flow of water... the head seems to be pretty cool, can dribble a bit of water on the head and it stays but just thought it should have more water going through?

what do you pros think, thanks in advanced i'm sure you guys have some advice... travis l.

What holes are you talking about? The cooling indicator is the exhaust relief port on the backside of the midsection. Water should blow out there with some exhaust. Not a steady stream, but broken up in a goodly amount of big droplets.

ok that's exactly what is happening, blowing out in big droplets like you say, i was of the assumption that it would come in a steady stream but evidently all is ok ty

Great motor. I had one of those once. The impellers are still available, incase you need one later down the road. Fortunately, they have the same lower unit as the older 10 and 18 hp Evinrudes too. That was also the first year of the rotogrip handle on the 15hps too. Have fun with it.:D

Actually, that one doesn't share the same lower unit as the 5 bolt 10-18 hp lower unit. It shares the same lower as the 4 bolt 1953-54 10-15 hp.
