water pump on and now on to the next issue

Finally got my parts and got the pump on. This was really the first time I had run the motor long enough for it to really warm up. It idles great (although it seems a little fast) but when I start giving it throttle there comes a point when it will no longer go to higher rpm. I can choke it and it will momentarily speed up but then goes back to what seems to be starving for gas.

I put clamps on the fuel lines to eliminate that. I also took the fuel loose from the VRO to check for a fuel restriciton. When I pumped the bulb I got tons of fuel from the hose.

I have unplugged the VRO but have not yet unhooked the oil lines to it.

I mixed my gas.

Could the VRO just not be pumping enough fuel?

Possibly, but when were the carbs last rebuilt?

Re: water pump on and now on to the next issue

This boat had been setting for approx 3 years when I bought it a couple of weeks ago. I purchased it without having run it, so the first thing I did was verify it would run and then took out gas tank for some bilge pump repairs.

After that I pulled the foot and put on the WP. During all of this I had a solid horn that would blow. I didn't want to shell the $ for the VRO so I just unplugged it and mixed my oil.

I thought I was all set to put it in the water. I was running it in a tub just to warm it up good and to check things out when I ran into this issue. All my VRO issues are in another post. It actually seems the VRO issue may only be the vacuum fuel pressure switch but I'm not sure.

So here I am with this problem trying to figure out if I will need a new VRO anyway.

Oh you mind readers ignore this because you already know but for everyone else this is a 1990 John 150:p

You will definately need to give the carbs a bath and rebuild then. Usually every 3 years anyways, but since it has been sitting, you will need to for sure. After that, do a decarb, check the FAQ for the procedure. This tutorial may help with the carb rebuild. Good luck.

Thanks for the help but let me ask you this. Wouldn't the fact that more gas does rev it up, indicate a lack of fuel?

I know you are right about he carbs being built. I was afraid it wouldn't even start after they sat that long.

Update

I ruled out air in the fuel lines by attaching a clear hose and running it. While I was looking for bubbles in line I would give it full throttle, it would go to high rpm's for 10-15 sec and then die down.

I know nothing about carbs. Would it be the floats or something else in the carb causing this? And I have never opened a carb is this something easily done?

The carbs are not real hard to put kits in.I would say that should be the next step.It would be a good Idea to get a factory service manual.

If when you choke it, it speeds up momentarily, that is a classic sign that the carbs are clogged (High speed jets in particular). What you are doing when you choke it is basically bypassing the carbs and shooting fuel directly into the intake. If the fuel pump was bad, pumping the fuel primer bulb would make it get up and go...

I have read where some people just clean and reassemble the carbs. Would this be a bad idea? Other than gaskets what are you actually replacing on the carb?

If you take them apart then a rebuild kit for sure,Gaskets, needle and seat the plugs for the orifices ect.Kits are cheap!May as well do it right the first time..;)

It would help to know what motor you are working on, all i know is it had a VRO. get a kit and do it right or you are wasting your time. you have to remove the low and high speed jets the core plugs, and clean the whole thing. if not just don't bother. dirty carbs are a fuel restriction. did you look at this?

Yep, I looked at the video. He makes it look easy. He didn't do everything in the video that my service manual recommends.

Any issues with the aftermarket carb kits that I should know about?

Ditto on the OEM kits. This and water pumps are 2 areas not to use aftermarket kits..
