Re: Water pump options to replace obsolete impeller

You may have just found the culprit to the seized engine you started with.

It was fine after rebuild and prior to 5 run hours on the lake. Took it out and lubed it up with Vaseline (the impeller) prior to first splash. It's a dry desert out here and rubber type products don't do too well. This is a bummer.

Re: Water pump options to replace obsolete impeller

I could use some advice on the 3-component conversion to eliminate the original impeller setup. I have found a variety of water pumps and thanks to a friend, a nice sea strainer but I do not have a good way to facilitate the installation of a hull intake fitting without pulling the engine again. I've searched for a transom intake that will pull water at plane but no luck. Any ideas? Thanks

Mike,

I found the following: www.boatfix.com/merc/Install/gas/86017211.pdf

It's Mercury install instruction but it will work. (Page 17)

It outlines 2 types of sea water pickup. Thru-hull and transom mounted. I don't know if the transom mounted pickup is a Mercury part but a Merc dealer should be able to hook you up.

regards,

Rick

I am about to pull the trigger on the Mods for the water pickup. I would feel better by running it past all of you first for any warnings to what I am about to do.

1. MERCRUISER MERCURY QUICKSILVER WATER PICK UP 88845A1 (No room to access through the hull)
2. San Juan sea strainer - 1-1/4"
3. A yet to be selected pump from Michigan Motorz. (Sherwood P-105 maybe.)

Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Water pump options to replace obsolete impeller

I often Marvel at the drawings that are provided here by members to help give a visual to the instructions. In an attempt to visualize my previous post for the cooling system modifications, I offer the drawing below. I did not have access to the full adobe software from work, so I used some old software at home called Dixon Ticonderoga (Version HB). I tried to install the updates, but couldn't find the patch (power cord for sharpener). Anyway here is the installation drawing. Any advice is appreciated.:D

Thanks mrapala! PM sent.

Those may be part number 983895. Mine would be 987176 or 3854072, probably different. I actually had a good day today and found 3 !

I've read on Offshorerry, they are cone clutch friendly... HAAHA There is a guy there with a blown 454 that simply installed a volvo raw water pump, just remove the old impeller... and let her eat. Not one problem in what i understand as years of hard service.

Glad i bought 3 and one full kit! Note that the engine is a "GL" it's a volvo :)

Try Jody at Sea-Way.com

Larry E

Yeah. I mentioned them back in post #17 in this thread .......... Seaway wants $135 for an impeller that originally retails for $39.

I wonder what else they're ripping people off on........
