1989 Engine 5.7 mercruiser inboard with Alpha 1 outdrive. With the muffs connected to the water pickup and the engine running, should i get a lot of water going to the engine or jUST A TRICKLE. i removed the hose off of the white tube that come from the water pump to the engine and noticed that i only had a trickle. I have a problem with this engine over heating, i also found that someone removed the <br />T-Stat, I had a shop install a new water pump two months ago when this first started, man i just put 1200.00 in . and still a cooling problem. The bright side is , the engine runs really well.

at 1000 rpm it should produce a good stream of water, if you hold the hose at a 45degree angle, the water stream should go about 12" before it falls off. {this is the bubba way of checking water flow, but it works as a good preliminary check.}put in a 140 degree thermostat.make sure your muffs are on tight and the hydrant is on all the way when running on the muffs.

The manual says not to turn the water on all the way when running on the hose.

that's right. don't turn it all the way up. it's not neccesary anyway & u may damage some seals in the process. here's what i do. before i start the engine i just crack the spigot a bit & wait till i see water coming out of the lower unit. that way i know water is circulating through the engine etc. then i start the engine, & turn the water up just a bit more. u need a t-stat. the engine cannot cool off properly without one. look at your impeller also.

Sounds like a bad impeller in the lower half of the outdrive, also check to be sure that the water tube coming from the impeller housing is mated properly with the metal tube to the upper half of the outdrive. You should also look at the connection and hose that connects the bellhousing to the transom,it may be cracked .
