I have a 1958 Evinrude 18hp motor and I got it finally run after 20 years of sitting. I ran it for a few minutes, and the engine got extremely hot, I don't know if this normal for this motor or not. The crankcase was hot to the touch

I checked the water pump and noticed it is jammed in there pretty good, it looks OK, and there is a few rubber shavings inside the housing.

I noticed that the water pump housing is a oval shape and that you need to wedge the impellar in there, is this normal or is there suppose to be some play in there?

I thought the water pump was working with some gurggling in the test tank, but don't know if that is exhaust or water? is there a way of testing to see if it works?

Also the water pump I have is like a soft rubber.
is that normal too?

I was told the water pump was replaced about 10 years ago and haven't been run since.

Thanks for looking!

Re: Water pump questions

I have a question about your quote at the bottom of your post. Does that mean that we should just talk to terrorist and then peace will occur? Or should we fight them to keep them from attacking us again?

Just curious. . .

Oh, and replace your impellar. Rubber gets brittle with time also, not just use. I don't believe there should be any play. It should be tight to the walls.

Jason

the quote...

well, lets take the middle east, now does that sound like its getting the job done?

Terrorism that's a different story because peace is not in their language nor do they know what it means, so kill em all and let God sort them out

waterpump..

umm..so the housing is supposed to be an "oval"? looks normal. Doesn't spin too easy, I don't know much about outboard cooling systems.

What is a tell tale sign that the water pump is working? Does this thing have a thermostat? I am curious if that is the case then it is probably stuck on close if the pump is in good shape

mideast - worked when Isreal moved (militarily) into palestinian areas. The homicide bombings stopped. At least for the time the military was there.

water pump - not sure if the oval shape is normal, but there should be a little resistance when turning. The tale-tell sign is commonly referred to as the "pee-hole" as that is what it looks like coming out. This lets you know that water is circulating through the engine. The water should be fairly warm and should come out in an even steady flow. If there isn't that, it may be the thermostat. On my engine, '83 50hp Evinrude, once I got the thermostat, waterpump/impellar, and tubing connection (from lower unit) all corrected, it started to pee. AND the overheat warning buzzer stopped sounding.

Also, just to check, you ARE running this on the water or in a barrel or with muffs on, RIGHT????
Hope this helps.

Jason

I don’t think your engine has a tell tail. Look for water spitting out of the exhaust hole at idle. I’m not sure if the 58, 18 had a t-stat, but if it did you would probably find it at the top of the head.

Re: Water pump questions

yes its running in a barrel, as far as muffs I have no idea what you mean.

I noticed the water is warm and cloudy in the barrel. I wish I knew where the water intake is.

Kinda hard to see with the water gurggling and where the discharge tube would be. I have a Seloc manual for this thing, but all it says is how to take it apart and assemble it not, troubleshoot it. Nor say what is normal and what isn't

The motor should never get too hot that you cant hold your hand on there for about 5 seconds. Trust me when I say Change your impeller you should not see any pieces of rubber. 10 years is a long time and I am sure it is no good.

Re: Water pump questions

I see shavings of the impeller, not chunks, lack of lubrication?

there is no thermostat on this motor. I am wondering if the motor wasn't in deep enough water?

impeller looks brand new.

Re: Water pump questions

Impellers always look brand new right before they fail. If you dont want to change it after it Has been sitting for 20 years Dont. But you will be back here asking questions on how to rebuild your motor.

Re: Water pump questions

If you see pieces even if it is a new impeller, then change the impeller. Make sure the motor is deep enough in the barrel. Even if you have the water intake under water, but the motor is not deep enough, the pump will not be primed and will not pump water. From what I understand running more than 5 to 10 seconds without enough water is enough to damage your impeller. Your manual should say to coat the new impeller with a light coat of oil before installing so it will turn easy during the installation. Water is the lubricant after that. When installing the pump housing, keep turning the drive shaft while tightening the housing screws to make sure you do not pinch the impeller. When I replaced mine, the impeller seemed almost too big to fit in the housing, but the turning with installation worked like a charm and made it easy.
