I have a 1958 Evinrude 18hp motor and I got it finally run after 20 years of sitting. I ran it for a few minutes, and the engine got extremely hot, I don't know if this normal for this motor or not. The crankcase was hot to the touch

I checked the water pump and noticed it is jammed in there pretty good, it looks OK, and there is a few rubber shavings inside the housing.

I noticed that the water pump housing is a oval shape and that you need to wedge the impellar in there, is this normal or is there suppose to be some play in there?

I thought the water pump was working with some gurggling in the test tank, but don't know if that is exhaust or water? is there a way of testing to see if it works?

Also the water pump I have is like a soft rubber.
is that normal too?

I was told the water pump was replaced about 10 years ago and haven't been run since.

Thanks for looking!
