Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

Just dropped the L/U and replaced the impeller. The old impeller hub was disconnected from the impeller, I guess we figured out the water problem.

However, to get the impeller in the housing and for avoidance of premature wear due to a dry start, I put some vasoline in the housing. Will this hurt the rubber impeller. I couldn't run it today because I beached my boat at the dock, but the tide ran out and I couldn't get the boat back out. SO I will run it tomorrow.

-andy

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

Well, the new t-stats are crap. They never opened, block was hot to the touch, not to mention hardly any tell tale and tons of water out the relief ports. I pulled em out, strong tell tale, cool block, and everything was ok.

-andy

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

Even though I have a strong tell tale now, I still have a decent amount of water coming out the relief ports at WOT, is this ok?

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

That indicates the poppet valve is opening above 3000 rpms (WOT)...

Are you sure it is closing below that level? A faulty poppet can cause your symptoms also... It has nothing to do with water temps, only water pressure.. If you are running at idle and water is exiting the upper exhaust ports you most likely have a faulty poppet valve (not closing). This should have nothing to do with bad t-stats... If it is stuck open, very little if no water will reach up to the top of the block to even reach the t-stats... Hence, no water flow and all of the water is dumped out of the block and exits the exaust...

But good to hear about the t-stat problem, if that is true...

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

The t-stats didn't open a WOT. I have a new poppet kit, so I will install even though the old one looked fine. I really think the t-stats were the problem though.

-andy

p.s. KCLOST did you ever install a new idle stabilzer?

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

Andy, you have a manual, it shows how to test the thermostats, or just boil water and use a candy therometer and see where they open. That is what I did when I replaced mine. You really only need them at low speed to maintain temperature. I was speaking to a merc mechanic/shop owner, w/35 years experience the other day and he said your heads should be ice cold if the poppet is opening while WOT, he suggested taking the cowling off and feeling the heads if in doubt.
You say you have a new poppit kit,I didn't know there was such a thing as a kit. Where did you get it or did you just buy parts?

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

I just bought individual parts (diaphram, poppit, spring....).

All I know is that the engine was hot to the touch after a short run a WOT with the t-stats in and that it was cool witht the t-stats out.

I test them before, you can read an above post, them seemed to be fine but utlimately they didn't work.

At any rate, I will get some new ones. Like I said in above posts...The engine, before these t-stats, didn't have any. It seemed to run perfectly at low speed then.

When replacing the poppit, hard far should you screw the screw into the poppit itself.

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

sorry ended early...

Because the further you screw in, the more compressed the spring gets and hence more water pressure is needed to push open the diaphram. Screw it in not far enough and water readily pushes through.

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

It should go all the way in... When you put everything back together the spring is going to be compressed even more...

I would also recommend replacing the carrier and grommet assembly that is fitting into the hole in the block...

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

Do you know the difference between the diaphragms for design I&II(same diaphragm) and the design III diaphragms. I just installed part number 64877 1 (which is for design I&II) on my design III pressure relief valve system. The two diaphramgs, i.e., the new one and the old one, looked exactly the same. But the part numbers and prices of each are different on merc parts express. Furthermore, it seemed as if the diaphragm was tucked under/molded to water deflector when I disassembled, I couldn't figure out do that again.

HELP

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

My manual has the torque for the screw at 25lb. in (2.8 N.m), that would be 2 ft lbs, I guess. Not a lot of pressure.
I checked Merc parts express and I didn't find your part # 64877 1 you has listed. Mine is listed as 14479 1 for the DIAPHRAGM $9.72. They must have made some changes between 88-89 year models.

Yeah Gary, I saw 14479 1 one as well. I think I should have purchased that one, however the one I took off the old diaphragm and it looked exactly the same as the new one. Oh well, hope this beast doesn't overheat.

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

I think I am going to install a water pressure gauge so I can monitor this.

Does this sound right for the poppet assembly:

screw->washer->diaphragm->water deflector->pressure relief plate->spring->washer->poppet->carrier->grommet.

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

That's the way the manual shows it, except you did not include the 2 gaskets. One goes in front of the cover and the other goes in front of the pressure relief plate.
I have the top one pictured in the doughrussel page.

Re: Water stopped flowing out the tell-tale

Well the fun never ends. Installed the water pressure gauge. Then I replaced the grommet and carrier. However, when I took the bolts out that secure the pressure relief housing/plate, the threads came out with the bolts as well...YEAH!!!Now we are having fun. Going to get some healy coils (I think this is how you spell it) from napa and in an attempt to use whatever threads are left. If does work I am going to have to retap with a larger size. I will step up to 3/8 16, instead of the factory 5/16 18.

That would be HeliCoil
